Based on a true story, "Stand and Deliver" is an inspirational tale of a dedicated 1982 inner-city L.A. teacher who rescues a group of poor Hispanic students from low expectations by turning them into math whizzes. Using humor, imagination and whatever other means necessary, Jaime Escalante gets his students to spend extra time at school (weekends, summers, early mornings) in order to pass the demanding AP Calculus exam. Escalante does this despite the skepticism and jealousy of other teachers and administrators. Their final hurdle is being accused of cheating by the Educational Testing Service, and having their scores canceled. Escalante then rallies his students again to retake the test, with only one day preparation, proving their integrity and accomplishments.

Making the World a Better Place One Kid at a Time

This is a true story about a man who leaves a lucrative job in the computer industry in the early 1980s to become a public school teacher working longer hours for much less pay with troubled youth. Against terrific odds he succeeds by encouraging his students to do better, and by believing in them when even the most benevolent school administrators had given up hope of these children ever graduating high school. This one teacher inspires his student to work hard and acchieve amazing goals, but not without many obstacles to overcome. I saw this film when it first came out and again last week. It is still just as relevent, fresh, and heart-warming as it was back in the 1980's. I can not recommend this film highly enough. Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips give outstanding performances, but so do the rest of the cast. No one really outshines anyone here because they all are at the peak of their performing careers, giving us their best performances.

What an inspiring and touching movie about a mathematics teacher that gave his all to a group of Los Angeles students. Since it's release over 20 years ago,the movie has been an inspiration for teachers and for those who care about kids on how they can succeed in the classroom. Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips and Estelle Harris are part of a first rate cast! I highly recommend this!

This film really delivers

This has GOT to be one of the most underrated films of the 20th century. James Edward Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Estelle Harris, and Eliot are part of a fine ensemble of actors that make this film enjoyable. But it's not just the acting that makes this film very special. It's also about never giving up on education, and on the future. The plot centers on the true story of Jaime A. Escalante, a high school teacher who will stop at nothing when it comes to making sure that his students succeed. The school that he teaches is in East L.A., where students never follow the rules and where teachers concentrate on strict discipline rather than higher education. Escalante slowly becomes a favorite among his math students, and as the film progresses, it becomes a very touching experience.
I can see that there hasn't been a DVD upgrade for this movie. Let's hope that a Special Edition of "Stand & Deliver" will be arriving soon.

Inspiring!

This is a movie that is both inspiring and timeless. In a time when education is seen as "uncool" by many people, this shows the pride and happiness in an academic accomplishment. I love this movie and it should be shown to every 8th grade class in the country to inspire kids to stay in school and to strive for what seems impossible. Through education we gain understanding, the ability to reason, compromise and better explain ourselves and understand the actions of others. Teachers should also watch this movie and if they don't have the passion that they see in this movie for teaching, then GET ANOTHER JOB!! The youth of this country is worth it.
