Plot: The third entry in the ultra-macho Rambo action movie series finds muscle-bound warrior John Rambo (co-writer and star Sylvester Stallone) refusing a request from his former Vietnam superior, Green Beret Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna). Trautman is to lead a mission to aid the mujahedeen rebels fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, but the Buddhist Rambo turns his friend down. When the mission goes awry and Trautman is subsequently captured and tortured within a prison fortress, Rambo launches a rescue effort of his own, armed with his trademark bow and exploding arrows. Along the way, he allies himself with the freedom fighters and runs afoul of the villainous Russian commander Zaysen (Marc de Jonge). At the time of its release, Rambo III -- released in the same month in 1988 that Russian troops began withdrawing from Afghanistan -- was the most expensive film ever made, at 63 million dollars. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Try to Save them All.

I have all of the Rambo movies and the progression to the final movie of course it there with the better video moves that make a movie look so realistic that by Rambo IV, I am closing my eyes through some of the violence.
This movie was very good and another simple, singular Rambo thought to follow and he does, as is his character and his morals. Do what is right, even if you might get killed in the most adverse conditions on earth and feel no pain and don't complain. He does what he know he must do or he could never live with himself, he could not live , period. He would not be a man if he did not try and did not do his duty to save sould and write wrongs. Even if he is a one man army. I loved this movie.

One of the greatest movies of all time.

Alright just kidding but it is a classic trash action movie. It was like 5 bucks or something. How can that be passed up. A must own.

Third blood

John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) goes to Afghanistan to pull his mentor Col. Trautman's (Richard Crenna) fat out of the fire after he is captured by the Russians. That's all there is to the plot. The action is better than Part II and it doesn't display that film's distasteful disregard for the lives of foreign noncombatants, so at least it's a step up from that execrable flick, though neither of them holds a candle to the genuinely enjoyable first film. Sure, it's ridiculous and retarded, but if that's what you're in the mood for, you've come to the right movie.

Makes Rambo II look like "Apocalypse Now"

This is one silly film. It has such daft gunfghts that you long for the realism of Buck Rogers.
Passes the time, don't expect luxuries like plot or characters, though.

Great Movie, Horrible Edition
Added 8/2/2008

Rambo III was a great deal better than Rambo II, but of course, not as good as First Blood. It's a great action picture and you'll never see Stallone as big as he was in this movie. He had to be taking Human Growth Hormone then. In some scenes it almost looks like there's a slight deformity in his face, which as I understand it, is one possible side effect of taking HGH. I remember when I was a kid, I saw this movie in the theater many times. The ultimate edition, unfortunately, sucked. For some reason I have yet to figure out, they added subtitles in many scenes where there were none in the theatrical version. The subtitles did nothing for the story and actually ruined most of the scenes because they were really dumb. They made this version almost unwatchable for me. So you might want to consider buying the special edition instead. The movie itself still holds up well over time and aside from some cheesey dialogue, is still fun to watch. Intensity, explosions, muscles, and my favorite....Rambo's exploding arrow tips....it's all here.
