Plot: A man trained for a life of excitement and danger is given a new and unexpected challenge -- minding a grouchy old woman -- in this comedy. Doug Chesnic (Nicolas Cage) is a Secret Service agent who takes great pride in his job, performing his duties with the utmost professionalism and always minding the details. However, his assignment for the last three years has been a severe test of his patience; Tess Carlisle (Shirley MacLaine) is the widow of a former U.S. president who is well-known for her diplomatic and philanthropic work, and Doug has been in charge of her security force. But Tess tends to regard Doug less as a security officer and more as a domestic servant, like her chauffeur Earl (Austin Pendleton) or her nurse Frederick (Richard Griffiths). While Doug regards it as beneath his professional dignity to perform little chores around the house or bring Tess her breakfast in bed, she orders him to do so, and he's in no position to say, no. Sometimes, Tess even refuses to obey Doug's security instructions, and should he argue his point too strongly, Tess will contact her close friend, the President of the United States, and ask him to give Doug a severe dressing down. So when Doug's three year hitch with Tess comes to an end, he asks to be given a more exciting and challenging assignment. However, Tess has other ideas; she's decided that she likes working with Doug, and she demands that his assignment be made permanent. Director Hugh Wilson also provides the voice of the President. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Guarding Tess

Doug is a Secret Service Agent who has just completed his stint in charge protecting Tess Carlisle, widow of a former U.S. President, and close personal friend of the President. He finds that she has requested that he not be rotated but instead return to be her permanent detail. Doug is crushed. He wants off her detail. She is very difficult to guard and makes her detail crazy with her whims and demands. Doug returns with no idea of how to continue dealing with her. There's action and adventure but the movie is much more character driven than plot driven. It's a treat to watch the unfolding relationship between this unlikely pair. Whether it's a realistic scenario or not, it makes for an entertaining, amusing, and touching movie you're bound to enjoy.

Nicolas Cage either shines completely or sometimes gets cast into dismal characters and roles. I personally like less the "Gone In 60 Seconds" tough guy side of his roles and extremely appreciate his soft tender side; roles like "Family Man" and this movie, "Guarding Tess".

This is an endearing role of the dynamics between two individuals, Tess [Shirley McClaine - former President's wife] and her retirement secret service detail - headed by Cage. Like I was taught about flying - its usually 99% boredom followed by moments of sheer terror - their detail that guards Tess has the same dynamic. Always on guard - to walk the dog or get her lunch, etc . . . . . The point in the story where danger is immenent is a vital part of the plot - but in a sense it's almost anti-climatic in comparison to the wonderful bantering that exists between Cage and the former First Lady. The points where the current President gets his calls from Tess if Cage doesn't behave - are to me the funniest parts of the film.

Great movie - a classic that I would rate with the likes of "The African Queen", "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" or "The Old Man & The Sea". This is a keeper that I almost had forgotten existed.

Great Movie

I am not a Shirley MacLaine fan. I watched this movie because it had Nicholas Cage in it. Well, let's say that I loved her performance in this movie. The interaction between her and Cage was very impressive. You could just sit there and forget you were watching a film. It seems reasonable that the head of her security team would become very fond of his charge. It also seems reasonable that she would come to feel as if he was her son. Eddie Albert plays the perfect bad son so well. This is a movie well worth watching with all the twist and turns, never knowing but always expecting something to happen. Don't want to spoil the whole movie for you but you'll greatly enjoy this one. It's definitely worth the money.
