Plot: The 18th century Scottish legend of Robert Roy MacGregor comes to life in this stylish adaptation of the swashbuckling novel by Sir Walter Scott. Liam Neeson stars as the title character, a cattle drover and proud head of a Highlands clan who takes a one thousand pound loan from the royal Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) in order to make a profit on some livestock that will keep his struggling people alive through the coming winter. One of the Marquis' henchmen, wily expert swordsman Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth) learns of the loan from the nobleman's factor, Killearn (Brian Cox), and steals the money by murdering Rob Roy's best friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz). Unable to repay the loan and unwilling to give up his land, Rob Roy becomes a fugitive, hunted by none other than Cunningham, who rapes Rob Roy's wife Mary (Jessica Lange). Scotch-British politics come to a boil over the Rob Roy affair, leading to an officially sanctioned showdown between the stoic farmer and Cunningham. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Good, but not better than Braveheart IMO...
Added 11/20/2009

The comparisons of this movie to Braveheart are inevitable as both pertain to old world Scotland and how the commoners dealt with the noblemen. This is a great movie overall, but I wouldn't put it above Braveheart, which is an instant classic. The scope of the plot of Braveheart is so grand that in some ways it's hard to compare the two flicks.

Liam Neeson is perfect in the leading role, and Jessica Lange does a fine job as well. All the acting is very good, in fact. The cinematography is magnificent! The only thing I thought was a little bit of a "cop-out" was how the final climax ended. Don't want to make a spoiler alert, so I'll leave it at that here. I have an explanation of this in my own comment of this review.

An enjoyable film, for sure...fans of Braveheart and other similar films should indeed like this one.

The DVD did not have any sound. Needless to say I was very upset and would never buy from this vendor or from Amazon again! I feel that I should receive a refund or at least a replacement movie.

Signed, Very unhappy former customer

Rob Roy movie

The movie has much action and is a great adventure. Although I had ordered a used version, I now wish I had ordered a new movie. My movie had some white lines in it, and the voice at times seemed muffled. The picture at times also had wavy lines through the entire screen. But the movie was great anyways.

Powerful, Involving Story
Added 4/21/2009

This is one powerful film. The first time I saw it, the Scottish accents made it a little tough for me to understand all that was being said and it hurt my viewing experience. Then acquired this DVD, used the English subtitles when I needed them, and really got into this movie, discovering just how good it is. It is excellent.

The widescreen picture makes it spectacular in parts, with some wonderful rugged scenery and the story reminded me of Braveheart, an involving tale of good versus evil. Here, it's Liam Neeson (good) vs. Tim Roth (evil). Both do their jobs well.

Few actors come across as despicable as Roth, which means he's a good actor. Man, you really want to smack this guy in his arrogant, irritating puss. He is so nasty and vile the sick national film critics love his character more than anyone else's here. That's no surprise.

Neeson is a man's man and a solid hero figure. Jessica Lange is strong in here as the female lead. The movie draws you in and gets you totally involved, so prepared to have an emotional experience viewing this.
