Plot: Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

Excellent action film of a world submerged by global warming, on the order of the "Mad Max" devastation prototypes. The film inspired a popular Universal Studios outdoor action show. It takes a long time to make a simple point, but it is worth the wait for a fan of action films. The supporting cast and extras are terrific.

A picture of our future?

At last! 10 years I was looking for this 135 min release!
I missed the TV show, my VCR did not work, and the bootleg VHS was too bad to watch... I was finally thinking this movie was doomed not only for "Mr. Cost-ner".
Today I can say it is a good action sci-fie movie with memorables scenes and sentences (Denis Hopper whith his fake eye talking to the Mariner attacking the Exxon Valdez: "Golly gee! A single tear rolls down my cheek.").

It is an interesting picture of what some people want us to believe: Ice-melting in the North-Pole will cause oceans covering every flat land. Are you sure?
When ice-cubes melt in my glass the coktail is not overflowing...

Please live happy!

To all those curious about the Extended Version:

First of all, I think Waterworld is better than its reputation. It's schlocky, sure, but it's a reasonably entertaining Mad Max riff on the water.

The reason there is no Extended Cut on Blu-Ray goes back to the recent DVD (or, in truth, all the way back to the creation of the Extended Cut). If you don't own Universal's 2-disc Extended Cut DVD, then you probably don't know that the whole cut is sourced from analog tapes that were provided for its television premiere (including language edits on the soundtrack -- the longer edit was prepared for the movie's network television premiere and was not intended for home video).

For Universal to create a proper HD master (video and sound) for this release, they'd have to go back and do a full restoration using the film negative, which would cost them a boatload (no pun intended) of money that they probably don't want to spend on Waterworld. Had they stuck the existing copy onto Blu-Ray, the viewer would feel cheated by the subpar picture quality.

That said, Universal is not totally exonerated from blame: they still could have stuck the SD-DVD of the Extended Cut in with the Blu, along with a note explaining why the longer edit couldn't have been included in high definition. In fact, there are many Blu-Rays missing additional content from DVDs that would be fine if the studios just included the 2nd SD-DVD in a 2-disc set. Regardless, it is not "greed" or something similar motivating this decision, just poor foresight many, many years ago.

Best movie ever!

This is my favorite movie of all time, and I love movies. I would pay a $100 for a blu-ray with the extended version.

This could of been a great transfer to Blu Ray but...

This could of been a great transfer to Blu Ray but... This movie sucks period. I'm really surprized this was even on the blu ray burners when theres so much better movies waiting for blu ray. Never understood why companies give crap old and new movies for the first few years of new formats. DvD did same in the years before PS2.
