Plot: Four women look back at the girls they used to be in this warm comedy-drama. Author Samantha Albertson (Demi Moore), actress Tina Tercell (Melanie Griffith), gynecologist Roberta Martin (Rosie O'Donnell), and housewife Christina DeWitt (Rita Wilson) are friends from childhood who get together for the first time in years when Christina is about to have a baby. Seeing the old gang sends Samantha down memory lane, as she recalls the summer of 1970, when the girls were 12-years-old and edging into womanhood. Samantha (Gaby Hoffmann) is struggling with the collapse of her parent's marriage, Roberta (Christina Ricci) must deal with the death of her mother, Tina (Thora Birch) is upset over her folks' apparent disinterest in her, and Christina (Ashleigh Aston Moore) is trying to overcome her mother's disinformation campaign about sex. Together, they discuss boys and first kisses, compare notes on the physical and emotional changes they're going through, and have seances where they try to communicate with a boy who died tragically 30 years earlier. Demi Moore, whose character narrates the film, also served as producer. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Too many problems with the whole "mystery" premise
Added 2/2/2009

There were so many problems with the whole "mystery" and the scenes surrounding that, that I'm really surprised at all the 5-star reviews. For instance, didn't anybody think it was ludicrous that grandma Cloris Leachman agreed to see the four girls when she knew she had an appointment and five minutes (or less) later, she was already late? And then she didn't tell them what they were burning to know because "it took me too long to get over the trauma of it", or something like that. Not to spoil anything, but huh??? The horrible, horrible thing was ridiculously guessable. And they go to the library and find the pages ripped out of the pertinant article - "Someone went to a lot of trouble to keep anyone from knowing." A lot of trouble? To rip out some pages? And the mystery is such that WHO CARES if people know?? And why was grandma the only one they could ask? Wasn't there anybody else her age or older that would remember? She looked like she was no older than 60 in the movie. And Crazy Pete's explanation for his nocturnal behavior? So, so lame.

And so Christina Ricci/Roberta grew up to be Rosie O'Donnell? Chrissy was the one always saying "do you think I'm fat" and "if I don't eat every few hours, I get nauseous." How did she end up NOT being Rosie O'Donnell?

And so they vowed to come back together if any one of them needed their support. What was the crisis, that Roberta was about to have a baby? She didn't have any family or any other friends? Plus Chrissy was already there - she needed all four of them? The two that came from out of town could just drop everything and come for who-knew-how-long it would take for the baby to come? And how convenient that it looks like it came that same day.

I gave it an extra star for Janeane Garofalo, but this movie was built on a house of cards and the performances were poor.

No Stand By Me.
Added 9/12/2008

Now and Then is a coming-of-age tale following the lives of four pre-teen girls. This film mostly takes place in the past rather than the present, this film should've been called Then and Now. Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffman have the best character development and depth. Demi Moore is the only adult character that seems affected by past hurts and trials from her childhood. Melanie Griffith continues to play the bimbo, she is so much smarter than that! Good film but not a home run.
