Plot: An ordinary woman discovers that her life was not always ordinary in this action thriller. Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) is a typical, well-mannered single mother working as a schoolteacher when she isn't looking after her children. Nothing on the surface would seem to be remarkable about Samantha's life, but every once in a while she has vague memories and unexplained impulses that don't add up with her current life experience; she has scars but no idea of how they got there, she suddenly displays a deadly talent for knife-throwing while chopping vegetables for dinner, and when she sees a deer, she suddenly attacks it with her bare hands. When an auto accident and a television news broadcast stirs some more uncomfortable memories, Samantha hires private investigator Mitch Hennessey (Samuel L. Jackson) to look into her past and see what he can find. Mitch learns that Samantha isn't really Samantha after all -- her name is Charley and she used to be a professional assassin with a secret government intelligence program. After a severe head injury, Charley developed a case of amnesia, and in time she developed her new personality as Samantha. However, her old boss has kept tabs on her, and now that it looks as if the old Charley is starting to come out again, he sends a pair of hit men after her to see to it that she doesn't remember anything else; soon Samantha and Mitch are on the run, trying to outdistance the killers as they get to the bottom of Charley's secret life. The Long Kiss Goodnight was directed by Renny Harlin, husband of leading lady Geena Davis; this was their second project together, following Cutthroat Island, released the previous year. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The reviewers can say what they like, because I love this film. Its one of the few films where a woman is the one that saves the day and isn't flopping around like an idiot. Also, Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson have real chemistry.

An All-Time Fave!
Added 11/19/2009

The Long Kiss Goodnight still stands -- after all these years -- as one of my all-time favorite action films. It has the perfect balance of close-up action, big special effects, comedic interludes, crisp writing, and human drama. It's important to bear in mind that this film was made before the spy-with-amnesia plot had become overused, before Samuel L. Jackson's on-screen persona had become stereotyped, before women had been legitimized as action heroes, and before anyone else (that I can think of) had tried a male-female "buddy" movie! The principle characters are all multidimensional, athough the villains are a bit clicheed. But, in the process of delivering an outstanding action movie, Samantha/Charly (Geena Davis) and Mitch (Samuel L. Jackson) must each face and resolve a number of down-to-earth issues about their lives, role identities, and personal character -- the kind we all eventually face, and which give this movie a humanity that's rare in the action/buddy genre.

Unfortunately, myopic critics panned the film, so it didn't produce well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. But, don't let its relative obscurity rob you of the opportunity to enjoy this trendsetting gem!

Decent film, not great

Geena Davis does a good job playing both personalities, and Sam "The Man" Jackson is great as Henessey, but the plot cliches take it down a couple notches.

Side note: Why does Amazon's review loathe the film, yet list it as "Essential Viewing"?

There hasn't been a review on this movie for a long time. That said you can see the movie description for the plot synopsis, I just want to add that this is an outstanding movie! One of my top 10 movies of all time! Geena Davis is awesome! A great action-comedy movie. I highly recommend you watch/own this movie.

What we need is a Special Edition . . .
Added 4/21/2009

This is one of the better action-comedy films of this decade. It has slick black humor and TONS of action. Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson make a fine duo, and they certainly kick a hell of a lot of @$$ in this movie. Expect a lot of heavy violence and some witty dialogue when watching this film.

However, I do believe that a Special Edition of The Long Kiss Goodnight is way overdue. There should be a brand-new digital transfer, with audio commentaries by the director and actors. A behind-the-scenes featurette would be nice, along with deleted scenes, bloopers, etc. It's 2009, and this recent DVD was released back in 1997. Don't you think it's time for a serious upgrade?

Anyway, great movie.
