Plot: Walt Disney Pictures resurrects one of their time-honored franchises with Race to Witch Mountain, a family-oriented sci-fi adventure that tells the story of two alien visitors (AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig) whose search for their spacecraft gets them caught up in an adventure with a cab driver (Dwayne The Rock Johnson) and a UFO specialist (Carla Gugino). As the group races toward the mysterious mountain in the Nevada desert that has mystified scientists and paranormal researchers for years, the government, gangsters, and an extraterrestrial bounty hunter attempt to prevent them from reaching their intended destination. Should the two planetary travelers fail in recovering their ship, an alien invasion will be launched against the entire planet. The original 1975 picture Escape to Witch Mountain was followed by the sequel Return From Witch Mountain, as well as a 1995 made-for-TV remake. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

In this film, "Race To Witch Mountain" is frought with thrills and excitement.
Dwayne Johmson plays a cabbie in Las Vegas who is trying to do the right thing
when two aliens disguised as teenagers suddenly appear in his cab: he provides his protection to these two teenagers who are being pursued by government agents
and an alien hunter; the car chases, the close calls and the special effects will keep the audience riveted to their seats- the children must find their space ship so they may return to their planet in time to save it, which, in turn, will save the Earth too. Excellent Movie!!!

I saw previews for this movie and it looked good and very action packed! My 4 and 6 year old boys are very much into action movies, but as Christians, it's hard to find good movies these days that don't contain bad language. This is one of the few newer movies that we have been thrilled with. No bad language...tons of action...good for the whole family. I highly recommend this movie.

Running time: 1:38
A UFO has landed outside of Las Vegas. The authorities discover with computer technology that the footprints they found belong to two humaniod teenagers.
Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) is a bored taxicab driver with a hard past. He gets insomnia. He is as strong the a wrestler named "Rock". He gets all kind of weird people and characters in his cab and tonight is no different with a UFO convention in town.
He also gets two intelligent teenagers that have a specific coordinates to get too. With the help of Jack and his taxicab they finally reach this old shack house. They pay Jack $750 dollars plus $500 more.
Concerned about the kids in the house, he tells them they have overpaid. Inside he finds the kids know a secret entrance to a basement below.
This leads Jack into an adventure with the young human aliens and he ultimatly tries to get them to Witch Mountain where their spaceship is at.

Also in the cast: Carla Gugino, Tom Everett Scott, Cheech Marin, Robert Torti, John Kassir, Garry Marshall.

Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann who were the original "Tia" & "Tony" in Disney's EEscape to Witch Mountain (Special Edition) (1975) and Return from Witch Mountain Special Edition (1978) have a small part together.
At the Stoney Creek Restaurant, Kim Richards plays a waitress and Ike Eisenmann plays the Sheriff.
Meredith Salenger of The Journey of Natty Gann (1985) has a cameo appearance.

This movie was filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada. In California in Agua Dulce, Santa Clarita, Palmdale, Pomona, Glendale.

I did not care for this modern version of the Witch Mountain films. I liked the simpleness and innocence of the orignial Disney films of the 1970's.
It was very nice for them to bring back Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann together for this film.

Incoherent but Mildly Entertaining

There's a UFO convention in Vegas. An ex-convict taxi driver picks up some very odd children carrying $15,000 in cash. It turns out they've come from a flying saucer, currently in the custody of the so-secret-you've-never-heard-of-it US military base "Witch Mountain." The kids are trying to return to their saucer and fly back to their own earth-like planet, which is an even more advanced state of environmental degradation. The kids' parents are part of a rebel group trying to convince the authorities on their planet that it's possible--and preferable--to reverse the damage on their own planet instead of taking over earth. The kids have pictures, stored on a PDA-like device, of a lush rainforest in the middle of a desert, that we are told is evidence that environmental degradation can be reversed. The US military authorities, for reasons that are not quite clear, want to hang on to the saucer and stop the kids from getting back to their own planet--I guess they assume the kids are hostile invaders? Some of the UFO convention participants know about Witch Mountain, even though they're not supposed to, and they help the kids in the "race" to Witch Mountain so they can get their flying saucer back from the US military. The difficulty I have with the plot is that I couldn't understand why the US military is portrayed as being so hostile--the alien children seem perfectly able to communicate their intentions--unless it's purely a plot device to create conflict.

The movie was fairly entertaining in a slam-bang way. The guy who played the cab driver, Dwayne Johnson, had a dry, detached way of handling his gag lines that worked well for me. He's really not half bad as a guy who's trying to go straight and actually cares about the odd children he's carrying.

The boy alien is pretty well played, but Annasophia Robb, who I quite liked in Bridge to Terabithia, was not so convincing as the girl alien. And there was something about her face: I could not get over the idea that she was really a young Lindsay Lohan, though I know that's not chronologically possible.

The obligatory lady helper, a scientist who studies life on other planets, is a pretty perfunctory character.

Warnings for parents: First, my seven-year-old boy kept saying, "I don't think this is appropriate for me. There's too much violence." Even though there's really no more bloodletting than in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons he loves--people just get thrown around a lot and there are many car chases and crashes--something about the live action aspect really disturbed him. Second, there's a lot of material about UFOs presented in a documentary-looking way, and my son kept asking, "Is this real?" So you'll want to keep close tabs on your kids as they watch this and help them sort out fact and fantasy. Finally, if you object to a movie that portrays the US military as an enemy out to harm visiting children, you might want to skip this one.

All in all a rather odd Disney production, with a difficult-to-grasp plot, some unusual conspiracy-theorist elements, an only marginally satisfying ending, and a great deal more violence than one would expect. I guess PG means all the violence you want as long as there's only mild swearing and no nudity.

Race to Witch Mountain

A taxi driver gets more than he bargained for when he picks up two teen runaways. Not only does the pair possess supernatural powers, but they're also trying desperately to escape people who have made them their targets. A new family classic. This movie has action and sci-fi thrills that blends nicely with comedy in one of Disney's best action movies. A great family movie.
