Plot: Dreamworks SKG's second feature-length animated film blends comedy and drama in an unusual historical adventure. Two genial swindlers working as stable hands stow away with Cortez, the legendary Spanish conquistador, as he searches for El Dorado, the lost City of Gold. Luck smiles on the two con men, and they happen to find a settlement in Mexico that they believe is El Dorado; however, while the two exotic strangers are at first embraced by the Mayan people, they've also arrived just in time to be offered up as the next human sacrifice. The Road to El Dorado was directed by Don Paul, who helmed the first DreamWorks animated feature, The Prince of Egypt; Will Finn, a featured animator on Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin; Bibo Bergeron, who worked on Ferngully: The Last Rainforest; and David Silverman. It features new songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and the voice cast includes Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Rosie Perez, Edward James Olmos, and Armand Assante. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Awesome Movie!
Added 12/29/2009

I wasn't sure about this movie at first, but when I saw it on tv, I knew I had to buy the dvd. This is a great movie! It's very funny, but also has some serious parts, it's perfectly balanced. The story is great and is filled with lessons about friendship & loyalty, and there is plenty of action. The voices are great, and the animation is beautiful! The music is also great, I found myself singing some of these songs after I was finished watching the movie. Everything about this movie is awesome!

Now parents, there are a couple scary moments that may frighten the little ones, but if your child can handle it, I would definately recommend it. My cousin loves this movie, and she even has it on video. She's also 7 years old (currently, when she got this movie, she was 6), so like I said, if you think your child can handle it, I would definately buy this movie. This is a great buy and a great addition to any movie collection.

Out of the Blue...
Added 12/2/2009

I beg to differ but The song "Out of the Blue" is one of my favorite songs from an animated movie ever...and animated movies have produced some of the most meaningful songs in the last 20 years. That song at least deserves some kudos. As for Kline/Branagh - comedy at its best for kids and adults and i agree - the horse steals the show.

What a delightful surprise. As a parent of a young one, I am always looking for something my little one will really enjoy, that is also child friendly and at least semi engaging for me the parent, (since if the little one likes it, it will be played often). If there is a Super Walmart near you, you might be familiar with their $5 Movie bid. I kept seeing this movie in that $5 movie bin but based on some negative reviews, I figured it was not worth it. After months of looking at it, I reconsidered, its just $5 dollars. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid $20 dollars for it, the DVD has gotten that much use - its been worth it.

What is good - characters, dialogue is funny, very colorful, and some nice original music.

It is not an historical or cultural piece, but neither was it intended to be. I wish your little one enjoys it as much as mine has. God Bless You and your Family.
