Then I first heard about High Tension in Rue Morgue, I though "Oh my God, another wannabe slacker flick with some chick running around in her skivvies chased by a masked killer." The poster showed the gal on the cover in barely anything and holding a knife.
One night while channel surfing I spotted the film and decided to test how much of a horror buff I thought I was. This film is a slap in the face. Never have I seen a more suspenseful modern film (take that HOSTEL) ever. This one plays up the traditional Hitchcock suspense I love and only clues you in on what's really happening if you're paying attention.
May have said with the twist happens it's predictable. Granted it was a big surprise to me and despite temporarily losing it's momentum a moment, it kicks back into overdrive when the big saw comes out to play all the way to the end.
This film DEFINITELY lives up to it's name and I love it because it keeps messing with you until the end. Even if you don't like the twist, the ending is one of the most inventive of it's kind for slasher films. Gorehounds will enjoy the creativeness of the creators of this film, though most of is seen towards the end so it doesn't overwhelm your brain and bore you to death when you finally see it.
My only complaint is that some of the discs aren't compatible with Vista, hence I couldn't watch it again on my computer, but I've watched it plenty of times on cable. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that Vista thing has been fixed. So go out and give it a shot. I loved it.

By the numbers slasher film with a nonsensical twist
Added 9/20/2009
College girls Alex and Maria travel to a country cottage only to be stalked by a killer.
Most of this film is a predictable horror flick with false alarms, bloody killings and narrow escapes. The usual cliches are in full force, phone lines are cut, the killer is everywhere, the pretty girls are screaming...
In the final minutes a twist is added when we learn the killer's true identity. The only problem is twist makes no sense. It contradicts scenes we'd already seen and feels forced and just added in to make a cliched film seem more shocking.
The photography is excellent, the directing fine, and while the girls don't have much to do other than look pretty and scream they do it well. But there's really nothing to recommend this disappointing film.

I purchased this movie a week ago and watched it Monday night with my 11 year old. Without giving away any of the movie I was totally shocked at the end I mean through out the entire movie I was on pins and needles even found myself talking to the TV all I can say it was AWESOME and I am about to watch it again. My daughter was even impressed and it takes a lot for a horror/thriller/suspense to impress her. About a year ago I started watching Foreign movies love them much more than American movies. This movie was every bit of High Intensity and I have recommended to all my friends and co-workers. ENJOY!!!!!

why anybody rated this film more than one or two stars is beyond me. It is a slow, boring, generic film that put me to sleep. One of the worst movies I HAVE EVER SEEN!

A DEVASTATINGLY BRUTAL HORROR FILM 9.5 OUT OF 10
Added 8/21/2009
When a film like the 2008 remake of Prom Night (Unrated), you have to wonder what exactly has happened with not just the horror genre, but with Hollywood films altogether. Prom Night was utterly terrible and is one of the worst horror films I've ever seen. It wasn't scary, it wasn't gory like a slasher should be, and it was nothing more than a worthless, cliched mess. I generally didn't like many of the films that came out during the torture porn craze, and I believe that most torture porn films are an insult to the horror genre. I hated The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition) and I really didn't care for Hostel (Unrated Widescreen Edition). When horror films like High Tension and Wolf Creek (Unrated Widescreen Edition) come around from foreign filmmakers, they show us that we have forgotten what a horror film should be like. Raw, unnerving, scary, bone-chilling, and they rattle you to the core. That is how a horror film should be.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: When two college friends; Marie and Alex decide to spend a weekend with Alex's parents to study and relax, the most unthinkable happens. A mysterious stranger pays a visit to the farmhouse, kills Alex's family, and takes the girls as his prisoners. This may seem like simple storyline, but as it unravels, it will throw curveballs that not even the most hardened horror fanatic can predict, and I was very surprised and left going, "What the f***?"
MUSIC: This film's music does take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it does set the mood and atmosphere quite well.
ACTION: This film is extremely violent and gory. In fact, when it came over here to the U.S. from France in 2005, it received an NC-17 rating (The highest MPAA rating possible) and Lionsgate had to tone it down to an R-rating. Thankfully, this Unrated version leaves every bit of horror goodness intact and uncensored. The film is very gory, to the point of shocking and disturbing on every level. This film is also pretty damn scary and will leave you on edge, and like any horror film is supposed to be, it is very unpredictable. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
ACTING: Now remember, if you are considering to purchase this film, please only watch Original French Director's Cut. I've heard far too many ramblings that the English voice-overs are terrible, and anyone who knows me, knows that I refuse to watch a film with English dubbing if it's foreign, and that I prefer to leave it in its original language. If you watch the original French version, the actors are fantastic and perform their roles extremely well, and they do make you believe that they are terrified. If you watch it with English dubbing, most people will tell you that it sucks. Any film with bad English dubbing is bound to be ruined, unless you watch the original version. Overall, I have no gripes with this area.
OVERALL: Tired of the usual crappy Hollywood horror flicks? Then buy High Tension, dammit! This film has gone down as an instant horror classic that is not afraid to be brutal and unnerving in every way possible. It will rattle you to the core and you will not know what's coming next.
THE GOOD: Great acting, good music, truly terrifying, unpredictable, and devastatingly brutal in every way.
THE BAD: Terrible English dubbing (Only watch the French Director's Cut!) and some moments of odd dialogue.
