Plot: A salvage team think they've made the find of a lifetime, until they discover there's more on board than meets the eye in this supernatural thriller. Led by Captain Sean Murphy (Gabriel Byrne), the crew of the tugboat Arctic Warrior have discovered a sideline far more lucrative than hauling ships in and out of the harbor -- they locate missing or wrecked ships in international waters, repair them until they can be brought back to port, and then sell off the ship and its contents as salvage. Acting on a tip from Jack Ferriman (Desmond Harrington), a pilot in the Canadian Air Force, Murphy and his crew -- salvage expert Maureen Epps (Julianna Margulies), first mate Greer (Isaiah Washington), and crewmen Santos (Alex Dimitriades), Dodge (Ron Eldard), and Munder (Karl Urban) -- set out to find a large craft seen adrift off the Alaskan coastline. To their surprise, the crew of the Arctic Warrior discover what appears to be the Antonia Graza, a famous Italian ocean liner, legendary for its luxury, which vanished without a trace in 1962. While they at first anticipate the payday of a lifetime from this find, the crew soon discover a sinister force has taken control of the ship, and before long they're battling not for salvage rights, but for their lives. Ghost Ship was directed by special effects man turned filmmaker Steven Beck, who previously directed the 2001 remake of 13 Ghosts. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Ghost Ship

The salvage crew aboard the tugboat Arctic Warrior is the best in the business. Under the leadership of their Captain, Sean Murphy, and with the expertise of salvage team leader Maureen Epps, they can locate any abandoned vessel, patch it up until its seaworthy, and drag it back to shore for a price. Ghost Ship is a great movie, it has a great beginning where the incident takes place at the beginning rather than waits 45 min. The ending was great and I like how she sees the killer walking up the boarding deck with another crew to take out to sea. The music is really good, and so are the creepy sound effects. Its not the kind of horror film that will keep you staying awake for a week, but it will make you think twice about boarding an abandoned ship.

Tantalizing treat...

This horror film is nothing more than a music video for those with short attention spans. Yet the story is captivating enough and the ship is most unsettling. Give it a go if you want a popcorn flick to stir your senses. The montage (complete with hard rock score) where the ghost girl shows Julianna Margulies how the ship became rife with spirits is worth the purchase price alone.

A Favorite Guilty Pleasure

Finally on blu ray, this movie looks better than ever. Scary, not really; a few jumps here and there, but this movie is more like a 'Shining' on the water; lots of cool visuals and a very nice surprise at the end. No Oscars, but the acting is solid, the twists are interesting, and it's over in 90 minutes. A great opening sequence sets the tone, and this movie just chugs right along from there. Sequel?

Could have done without the toast to 'the sea', however.

Definitely worth a rental

This is an entertaining movie, particularly if you're a fan of horror movies including water/boats as a thematic element. In a very broadstroke overview, a team of boat salvagers are led to salvage an otherwise illusively unmanned cruise ship...which happens to be haunted. The acting is generally pretty good, the story is acceptable, and the production values are good. In fact, the video quality is particularly good. As usual, the ending starts to meander toward absurdity, but the rest is entertaining.
