Plot: It's late 1944, and the Allied armies are confident they'll win the World War II and be home in time for Christmas. What's needed, says British general Bernard Law Montgomery, is a knockout punch, a bold strike through Holland, where German troops are spread thin, that will put the Allies into Germany. Paratroops led by British major general Robert Urquhart (Sean Connery) and American brigadier general James Gavin (Ryan O'Neal) will seize a thin road and five bridges through Holland into Germany, with paratroops led by Lieutenant Col. John Frost (Sir Anthony Hopkins) holding the most critical bridge at a small town called Arnhem. Over this road shall pass combined forces led by British Lieutenant Gen. Brian Horrocks (Edward Fox) and British Lieutenant Col. Joe Vandeleur (Michael Caine). The plan requires precise timing, so much so that one planner tells Lieutenant Gen. Frederick Browning (Dirk Bogarde), Sir, I think we may be going a bridge too far. The plan also has one critical flaw: Instead of a smattering of German soldiers, the area around Arnhem is loaded with crack SS troops. Disaster ensues. Based on a book by historian Cornelius Ryan, A Bridge Too Far is reminiscent of another movie based on a Ryan book, The Longest Day. Like that movie, it is loaded with more than 15 international stars, including Sir Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford, Hardy Krueger, Gene Hackman, Maximilian Schell, and Liv Ullman. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., All Movie Guide

I just returned from Nijmegen Netherlands; we attended several memorial celebrations all over the area in honor of 65 years of freedom from the Nazi invasion. I decided to watch this movie, it was excellent. God bless America and thank you GI's!

One of the best World War II films

'A Bridge Too Far' is truly epic. It is really one of the last sprawling epics about World War II before 'Saving Private Ryan' which had a more intimate story. I really like how historically accurate 'A Bridge Too Far' tries to be and it is really great to see all of the legendary actors at work. Edward Fox is one of the standouts as Horrocks and he brings a real character to life. Sean Connery is also very good as Urquhart. Anthony Hopkins is quite good as John Frost. Robert Redford gets to star in the most stirring scene for American viewers that depicts the assault in rubber boats across the Waal river by the 82nd Airborne. The courage displayed in the assault was truly legendary. The film really does a good job in depicting this crucial segment of the battle. Also the suicidal SS armored vehicle assault at the bridge at Arnhem is well depicted and shows how tough the British paratroopers were and the true arrogance that the Germans displayed numerous times during the war.

Only wish that a DVD version could come out that was truly cleaned up and remastered. The movie deserves better picture and sound on DVD.

The film has good acting, great actors, and very good battle scenes. Highly recommended to all movie and military history buffs!

A Bridge Too Far

I thought that this movie was very realistic. Probably too realistic to be popular, but hey. Wars aren't nice. Anyone who has found a dead body by smell, as I have, knows that.

Recommended for anyone who wants too see what war is really like, not a pretty picture.

One of the most accurate accounts of the tragedy of "Operation Market Garden", a debacle brought about by the arrogance and incompetency of British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. The film is excellent in it's historical content, gives the viwer a real sense of having been there.
EXCELLENT!!!!!
