Plot: A tortured man finds himself caught in a middle-ground between hallucination and reality in this supernatural thriller, scripted by Bruce Joel Rubin of Ghost (1990) and My Life (1993). Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) is a soldier stationed in Vietnam who undergoes a traumatic experience on the battlefield - the nature of which is initially unclear. The film then moves into his post-Vietnam experience in 1970s New York, where he feels consistently traumatized, but can never quite remember exactly what happened to him in Southeast Asia or to free himself from his anxieties over the recent tragic death of his young son (Macaulay Culkin). Though well educated, Jacob works as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and has become romantically involved with one of his co-workers, Jezzie (Elizabeth Pena), after divorcing his wife. Soon, Jacob's tenuous hold on reality starts to slip as horrifying events befall him; he is nearly run over by a subway train, pursued by faceless demons in cars, and spots reptilian tails and horns protruding from the bodies of those he encounters. Jacob also suffers severe panic attacks related to the chaos that may be reality, or may exist only in his mind. He seeks counsel from Louis (Danny Aiello), a kindly chiropractor, as his ex-wife Sarah (Patricia Kalember), fellow Vietnam vet Paul (Pruitt Taylor Vince), and enigmatic stranger Michael (Matt Craven) all try to help the tortured soul. Jason Alexander, Ving Rhames and Eriq LaSalle highlight the supporting cast. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I was really into the movie all the way through but I just felt really let down by the ending. I was expecting something that would turn the movie on it's head and blow me away. But I waited and waited and then movie was over. I guess I was expecting too much. I really loved one freaky scene in the movie. But after that it was a dud.

Must have movie

This movie is one of those movies that you MUST see, if only once. While it does have some disturbing images, it is well worth the ride to find out just exactly what Jacob's Ladder truly is.

Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins from The Shawshank Redemption and War Of The Worlds) is a very troubled man. His life is filled with flashbacks, nightmares, visions, omens, and portents. Oh yeah, and those hideous demons he keeps seeing. Is he suffering from post traumatic stress from his Viet Nam days? Is he losing his mind? Or worse, is he caught up in something supernatural, with implications beyond his deepest fears? Jacob has no idea. He is simply adrift in this hell-world. The clues are all around him, but we'll have to go through his ordeal with him, in order to witness the solution. JACOB'S LADDER is one of the best movies of its kind. If you enjoy using your brain once in a while, then you should love it. Watch for Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn Of The Dead), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Captivity), and a young Macaulay Culkin (The Good Son). Highly recommended...

Great movie, great story, great effects

I loved this movie! Right from the beginning, it was able to grab my attention and keep it. One of the few movies I could watch over and over again. Even with some disturbing scenes, my mom even liked it. It has a deep message, very touching. The Amazon.com review says it "chokes on its 'surprise' ending", but after watching the other endings from the special features menu, it's really the best ending they could have gone with. Definitely recommend this movie for fans of the Silent Hill stories.

The Bottom Line:

An extremely dark mind-bender of a film, Jacob's Ladder wallows in the depths of paranoia, with seemingly every shot containing something sinister or something lurking beneath the surface; watching it isn't necessarily a "fun" experience, but if you like movies that make you think or make you scared, you could hardly do better than this twisted 1990 film from the director of Fatal Attraction.
