Plot: As Summers Die was produced as an HBO Premiere attraction. Set in the segregationist South of the 1950s, the film pits the wealthy but decadent members of a landed-gentry white family against a feisty old black woman, on whose property oil has been discovered. Idealistic attorney Scott Glenn bucks the family--and the inbred prejudices of the community--to protect the woman's interests. He finds himself with two unsuspected allies in the forms of young Jamie Lee Curtis and ancient Bette Davis, two renegade members of the very family that wants to grab the oil-rich land. As Summers Die had its cable-TV debut on May 17, 1986. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When an Actor Becomes an Activist: Bette Davis
Added 11/19/2009

Think again, if you don't know that Bette Davis used her enormous public influence on screen to make political points. During this film, very late in the life and acting career of Bette Davis, near her death even, The First Lady of American Cinema takes on US racial supremacism. With Jamie Lee Curtis playing her beloved niece and ally, Bette Davis is true to her usual form: she doesn't give a flip that we see her post-stroke, living with terminal cancer, elderly and very near her death. Glamour wasn't synonymous with the name or fame of Bette Davis; great acting was.

As Bette Davis aged, she used her career all the more to depict characters who contended with contemporary key US social issues. Miss Davis always took the side of the oppressed, marginalized, controversial and every day people. As Hannah Loftin, she takes a major stand for a minority statused woman in order to see that justice was done. That's what the main thread of the story line is all about.

The last scenes of the film are when Bette Davis proves that no matter her age, deteriorating health, or physical appearance, she's still the very same gutsy, risk-taking actor she had always been. Jamie Lee Curtis turns in one of her finest performances in scenes with Davis that are choice. Given that this is Davis' final made for television movie, it is highly collectible when in mint condition. Given that it is superbly acted and the story line is right on point, it is a treasure to own.

Forbidden passion and burning prejudice ignite in the heat of the deep south.

Emotions are riding high in a small southern town. A lawyer, Willie Croft (Scott Glenn), is trying to defend an ageing black woman against the Holts clan, a powerful and greedy family.

A family with a dark and sinister past, whose evil schemes and plots are safe in their incestuous past. That is until lawyer Willie Croft finds an unlikely ally in Whitsey (Jamie Lee Curtis), a wayward cousin of the Holts.

The pressure's on and nothing's going to stop the Holts from winning, especially their own kin. As Summers Die is the sensational story of love and hate, power and passion.
