Yes, One for the Family..Christmas Viewing, Perhaps
Added 11/18/2009
I can see why critics would be critical and the public would love it; it is a traditional good fairy helps out the needy tale. Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, one of our foremost stage couples, scored again with this now 20 + year old story. Both have done deadly serious work, together and apart, but, like Helen Hayes, in her old age, they were happy to play elderly people in order to work. Happily, that made most of us happy, too.
So, on its 22nd birthday, I can assure those looking for family fare, that this will still hit the spot with all.

Great sleeper of a movie

This movie is a delightful surprise!
This is a sentimental comedy-drama about a couple dealing with the afflictions of old age while trying to hold on to their family home and restaurant.
A ruthless tycoon is buying up all of the property around the old building where a small community of people live and refuse re-location. Lead by Frank and Fay (played by real-life couple Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy), the holdouts face thugs who vandalize the building and threaten them all with bodily harm, trying to force them out.
In response to Frank's desperate cry for help, a flying saucer two-some come to their rescue. They help with repairs to the building and help run the restaurant, along with their tiny space-ship offspring.
There is heartwarming drama and humor in the efforts of the "visitors" to help mend the old building and the lives of those who dwell within.
The special effects are endearing at best, but the over-all movie experience is fun for the whole family.
Caution, the building fire scene could be very scary for the little ones.
