Plot: This run-of-the-mill teen romantic comedy's main attraction is 22-year-old Demi Moore as Laura Victor, an aspiring rock singer. The slightly younger Jon Cryer is Charles Cummings, a dedicated photographer who meets Laura, falls in love, and decides that a dedication to furthering her career might further his own amorous designs. Charles is essentially a loser when it comes to women -- and just about anything else except photography. One day Charles captures Laura on film along a San Francisco seashore and is shocked but excited to run into her later while at a North Beach nightclub where she is a performer. Unable to just let her go, he finally convinces her to pose for him, and as a result of that session he comes up with one good photo which he then puts on nearly 200 San Francisco cabs -- using up all his savings in the process. The result consists of offers that have nothing to do with singing -- until one exception occurs. Another new face in the crowd in this conventional movie is Jennifer Tilly (younger sister of Meg Tilly and Oscar-nominated for her role in Bullets Over Broadway), working in her first film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

About Last Night
Added 11/1/2009

I purchased this to demonstrate certain concepts to my clients. I am a family counselor. The concepts were demonstrated in a light hearted manner but clearly got the idea across. It served my purpose well. The movie is also highly entertaining. However, I did not expect the profanity and sex scenes. Do not have children in the room when you view this movie! It also embarrased me slightly with my clients who had previouslyn viewed me as primarily conservative.

a good movie...

This is basically a movie about the adult single scene in the mid to late 80's. It's based in Chicago and is about a couple that gets together after a "one night stand" struggling with love and life. Throw in their friends that are not trying to help in the least (his is the typical @#$hole and her's the typical b@#$%). All four actors play their parts well and this remains one of my favorite movies from the 80's.

I've watched this movie several times and even bought the soundtrack. I recommend it for a good watch. This is back when Demi Moore was absolutely beautiful in my opinion

Blu-ray Version: Relationships Look Even Clearer Now!
Added 8/17/2009

One of my favorite 80s movies still works well 20 years later. "About Last Night" (1986) is a tale of two handsome young singles in the 1980's, enjoying the pleasures of promiscuity and one-night-stands before the serious onslaught of AIDS changed everything. Loosely based on the 1974 David Mamet play "Sexual Perversity in Chicago," the story is about Debbie (Demi Moore), a young graphic designer, and Dan (Rob Lowe), a restaurant supply salesman. They meet at a bar, have a one-night stand, and unexpectedly fall in love. The glow of the initial connection and great sex begins to wear off as their best friends Joan (Elizabeth Perkins) and Bernie (James Belushi) sabotage the relationship. Not content being single themselves without a partner in crime, Joan & Bernie continue to needle their friends and point out the flaws and foibles that being in love bring. Poor communication between Debbie & Dan also plays a part in their relationship beginning to crumble, and as predicted by Bernie & Joan, they break up. Dan almost immediately realizes his mistake in letting Debbie go, but she has already had enough of being with someone who doesn't appreciate her. What happens next? You'll have to watch to find out.

The casting in this movie is perfection; Lowe & Moore have excellent chemistry together, and their relationship is both fun and painful to watch, as they go through the twists and turns that most relationships encounter. As the abrasive best friends, Perkins is stunning in her film debut & Belushi is perfect as the obnoxious politically incorrect neanderthal with a heart. Perkins' character is very similar to the character of Miranda from Sex and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset). Man-hating on the surface, she deeply wants to fall in love with a man who will return her feelings. However, her bitterness at being burned in the past is her armour, and does not make her very attractive to the opposite sex. Look for Megan Mullalley (better known as Karen Walker from "Will & Grace: The Complete Series") in a bit part as Deb & Joan's friend Pat, a slutty friend who eventually puts the moves on Dan. Just like "Sex and the City" where NYC is an actual character, Chicago plays a large part in this film. Shot mainly on location, it is a time capsule showing many of the sights and sounds of the beloved midwest city.

SPECS:

On Blu-ray this film looks and sounds better than it has in previous video incarnations. A good clear picture (1080p High Def/1.85:1) with the right amount of grain and a fun bouncy 80's soundtrack (including Sheena Easton and Bob Seger) that sounds amazing in Dolby True HD 5.1. Subtitles in English, English SDH, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Audio also available in Spanish 5.1 (Dolby Digital).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Not too many, but what's there is very enjoyable.

*Edward Zwick (Director) and Rob Lowe in Conversation (42:03)--A fairly lengthy but truly interesting dialogue (in HD) between the two, reminiscing about the making of this film. Zwick discusses how the film is about a premature relationship that has to mature during the pre-AIDS period, which was a time of celebrating sexual promiscuity. He also talks about early casting calls and screen test; considered for Demi Moore's role were Diane Lane and Mariel Hemingway. Rob Lowe was on board from the start, but David Caruso gave a strong read for the role that went to Jim Belushi. Elizabeth Perkins, never in a film before, nailed her audition and was cast immediately. Zwick and Lowe joke how "About Last Night" is the perfect date movie for both males and females; it gives the hope that you can get laid tonight and then fall in love. Zwick calls "Date Movie" the code word for sex; and that "Chick Movie" is code for crying in a movie. Interestingly enough, at the time of filming, Demi Moore was in a serious relationship with Rob Lowe's then best-friend, Emilio Estevez. This didn't seem to effect the very explicit sex scenes or the chemistry between Lowe & Moore. Amazingly enough, this film was shot in 41 days.

*1986 Vintage Featurette (5:45): Light and breezy fluff, with Moore and Lowe discussing the film's theme of a one-night stand that turns into a love affair and how it becomes difficult when the two have flawed communication.

*Previews: "The DaVinci Code Extended Cut," "A River Runs Through It," "Ghostbusters," "Casino Royale," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition"

Travel back in time and enjoy a very insightful and still timely film about relationships.

Awesome....

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I remember taking a girl to see this as a SNEAK PREVIEW when it first came out. The regular movie showing with this was FERRIS BUELLER. This is the best Jim Belushi movie I have ever seen...

As good as you remember
Added 7/19/2009

This movie was extremely important to me as a young teenager: the way Jon Cryer pulled off his everyman geekiness really spoke to me during a crucial time in my life. His characterization of Charles Cummings, like so many John Cusack roles, lived on in my memory as proof positive that the underdog with the slight build could not only intelligently put off the bullies around him, but wind up with the hottest girl.

This no-frills DVD is a welcome addition to my movie library. It's a good transfer, and the film is every bit as good - perhaps better? - than I remember it from countless viewings on HBO. Mr. Cryer may have gotten short shrift in the inevitable comparison with Matthew Broderick, but this film stacks up as well against "Ferris Bueller" in terms of geeky-cool any day. Demi Moore is at her '80s best: both demure and sexy, she's the perfect foil for Cummings' affections. The soundtrack is killer, and there's an actual big sigh of relief at the lack of involved menu pages or special features. What...you need a "25th Anniversary Edition" with interviews explaining the detailed plotlines, and what it all means? Pfagh. Watch the film, relive the boy/man you used to be, and be glad that Charles Cummings was there to help point the way.

Watchable but cheesy
Added 4/5/2009

This movie seems very dated. Some 80s movies still play well, but this one seems to suffer a little more from time than others. The basic storyline about a kid who uses his savings to help someone find her future is kind of cute, but the details of the movie are cheesy be it the somewhat unrealistic photography angle, the gratuitous 1980s topless scenes or the obvious lip-synching of Demi Moore. There's just something about this movie that doesn't quite click for me, but it's still not too bad as far as old movies go.

No small affair
Added 3/24/2008

This movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure, silly 80's costumes and all. I especially enjoy Jon Cryer's "coming of age" portrayal. He's true to his love of photography, tolerates his crazy family with wry humor, and follows his own path. But when that path intersects with Demi Moore, his well-intentioned attempts to win her favor are classic. Formulaic or not, he and Demi bring a charm to the movie that makes it a personal favorite over and above some of the more well-known 80's hits by the Brat Pack.
