Plot: This is an amiable little parody from director Trey Parker, best known as co-creator of the cult TV series South Park. Set in 1873, the film deals with Alfred Packer (Juan Schwartz, aka Trey Parker), who is accused of cannibalizing members of his six-man party on a trip West. There are comic songs, Japanese people pretending to be Indians, and a cyclops whose eye spurts pus. The film's highlight may be Alfred's saloon kung fu fight with a cocky fur trapper named Frenchy over his beloved horse Liane. Cannibal! is surprisingly light on gore for a Troma Team release (save for the prologue and finale), concentrating instead on goofy sight gags, sex jokes, and silly songs like Shpadoinkle and Hang the Bastard. The cinematography is attractive, evoking all those frontier musicals of yore, and the overall quality is good, if obviously low budget. This film also features a cameo by underground film maven Stan Brakhage as the father of one of the pioneers. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Great B-Movie cult classic, Shiny New Shpadoinkle Edition!
Added 10/1/2009

I just recently bought the 13th Anniversary "shpadoinkle" edition of the movie. I now own both versions and, If you are a completist , then you have to get both versions because some of the special features from the one disc version are missing, most notably the beachside matt and trey interview is strangely absent on the new version.

This movie is great and starts Trey Parker's signature style of mixing comedy music and shock humor, but with a whole lot of heart. If you thought Transformers 2 was "awesome!" then dont watch this movie, you will hate it. This is one of those movies where you're either on the train or you arent and alot of people just wont "get" it or cant get past the low budget cheesiness of it all.

Some of the biggest laughs in the movie come from Matt Stone. The worst acting actually comes from Trey Parker, but I am willing to forgive it because, its friggin trey parker! He's just really stiff the whole time. His acting got much better in Orgazmo, and he hit his stride in Baseketball. I really wish Matt and Trey had done more live action stuff together, but... oh well, we've got 13 seasons of South Park, so, I owe alot of laughs to these guys.

Also, the picture quality is much better in the "shpadoinkle" edition. I dont think that they remastered it or anything, I think it is just less compressed. You can actually see the grain of the 16mm film as opposed to digital artifact blur like the one disc version. Also, all of the giant breast laden "troma" features have been removed for this new version of the DVD, making it more PG-13 and less of a big plug for Lloyd Kaufman.

I'm not a fan of Troma in general, just this movie. This movie is REALLY mild compared to other troma flicks. I would give this film a hard PG-13 or a light R rating. There isnt any nudity, minimal swearing and not really that much cannibalism. The most disturbing part of the whole 2 disc set is the vomit inducing trailer for Poultrygeist that comes on before the movie.

Cannibal! The Musical: not as good as other TP movies
Added 4/4/2009

As an avid Trey Parker fan, I was excited to add Cannibal! The Musical to my collection of Trey's films. But this one is pretty much of a dud. I thought Baseketball was hilarious, and I loved Orgazmo and can watch Team America over and over, and laugh every time. Granted this is Trey's first movie (and there are a few funny moments) but the songs are pretty lame and it just isn't up to par with his later movies. But if you love TP's sense of humor you should at least watch this one once.

Still no Shatterproof!!!!
Added 3/5/2009

Had to purchase this one due to the fact that I'm in some of the Special Features. Had a blast performing in the Las Vegas production and updating the VHS copy was past due. However, I give this, dare I say cult classic, only 4 stars as the cut song "Shatterproof" is still missing from yet another Troma release of this film...sigh. What's wrong with you guys? I know it's an issue with Trey thinking that the song makes Packer seem too tough, but so what. Throw it in as an Easter Egg...something. Fans of the film want to see the scene. They would eat it up. (har-har).

Give us what we want. Shpadoinkle

Mild-mannered Alfred Packer (Parker) finds himself leading a small group through the mountains and ends up accused of cannibalism. The movie starts after his arrest and is told in flashbacks to the reporter (Toddy Walters) who'll do anything to get her story.

There are vicious trappers, Japanese Indians, and a bittersweet love story between Alfred Packer and Lianne. And in true musical fashion, the characters have a tendency to burst into song.

As you might guess from the presence of Parker & Stone, Cannibal the Musical is hysterically funny and cheerfully disgusting. Add several weird and catchy songs, and it's impossible to resist. Truly, it's a shpedoinkal movie.
