Plot: Barry Levinson directed this crime drama based on a controversial bestseller. Jason Patrick stars as Lorenzo, a New York reporter more commonly called Shakes, a nickname courtesy of his three childhood pals from Hell's Kitchen -- Michael (Brad Pitt), John (Ron Eldard), and Tommy (Billy Crudup). As kids, all four were sent to reform school after accidentally killing someone during a cruel prank. There, the boys were raped and beaten by several guards, including Sean Nokes (Kevin Bacon), a fact that they've kept secret into adulthood. Michael is now a rising star in the district attorney's office, while John and Tommy are founders of the Irish gang the Westies. When Nokes walks into John and Tommy's hangout, they kill him in cold blood and go on trial, defended by a drug-addicted lawyer (Dustin Hoffman). Michael and Shakes conspire with childhood friend Carol (Minnie Driver) and local priest Father Bobby (Robert DeNiro) to free their friends and get even with the surviving guards. Based on a true story chronicled by Lorenzo Carcaterra in his novel of the same name, Sleepers stirred controversy when the veracity of the book was challenged by reporters who could find no documentation of the events described. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

An excellent movie depicting how bad things can be in a juvenile detention center. Terrific actors! Sad, because it's based on a true story.

This is a well acted movie. I have no doubt that horrible things like this do go on in some institutions. It'a probably not a movie for everyone

This film boasts an amazing cast, all at the top of their game. This is reason enough to see the film. The story, whether or not it is factual, is stunning. You won't forget it. I do warn any sensitive types that there are scenes that you might not want to see. I stopped watching it after the intense scenes of brutality in the boys' correctional institution. However, in a few days I returned to see how it would end, and I'm glad I did.

Robert DeNiro underplays his role beautifully, portraying the most sympathetic and hunky priest since Bing Crosby. Dustin Hoffman, whom I often dislike, came through with an almost comic performance. It wasn't supposed to be, and perhaps Hoffman overplayed it a little. Still, it's quite colorful and adds to the overall gritty tone of the film. Brad Pitt is wonderful and reminded me that he's much more than a pretty face. Minnie Driver was her usual warm hearted self and adopted a very good New York accent for the role. Kevin Bacon is slimy evil incarnate--another perfect performance.

All in all, this is a well made film, and, if you can stomach some heart-wrenching brutality, it's worth watching.

great story with fantastic actors

this is the movie adaptation of the novel 'sleepers.' this book is based on a true story and the film is very true to the book. robert deniro as the neighborhood priest who would just as soon listen to your confession as bust you in the nose is spot on. he has the right nuances for the tough guy man of the cloth. kevin bacon is evil incarnate as the abusive prison guard who beats and molests the 4 friends from the neighborhood. ron eldard and billy crudup are scary as the grown up boys turned cold blooded killers. however, in this story you have empathy for what they become based on the horrors they endured as juveniles. brad pitt and jason patric are wonderful as the two men who didn't completely, well, not obviously, succumb to the horror of what went on in the reform school. they plot their revenge deliciously. minnie driver is perfect as the literal, girl next door and dustin hoffman is a fantastic surprise as the washed up lawyer who is defending eldard and crudup. it's a tough movie to watch, but one realizes this kind of abuse of power has gone on for centuries and ruined lives and families in abundance. a good movie with interesting twists and turns. vittorio gassman is also part of the cast as the neighborhood protector.
