Plot: Geena Davis stars in this adventure saga as the most swashbuckling female pirate to ever lay waste to the seven seas. Morgan Adams (Davis) is the daughter of a pirate who has followed in her father's footsteps. When he dies, he passes along his ship, a crew of bandits, and one third of a treasure map (which happens to be tattooed on his skull). Morgan is eager to search out the rest of the map and retrieve the riches, but the fragment she holds is in Latin. Morgan then buys a well-educated slave, William Shaw (Matthew Modine), who can read the ancient language and already has a taste for the criminal life. However, Morgan and William are not long into their search when they discover that someone else is following the same trail for the rest of the treasure map: Dawg Brown (Frank Langella), Morgan's uncle and as black-hearted a scurvy dog as ever boarded a ship. As Morgan and Dawg battle each other over the fragments of the map, a British journalist (Maury Chaykin) covers their feud for the penny press. William Shaw was originally to have been played by Michael Douglas, who dropped out in the early stages of this troubled production. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The reviewers can say what they like, because I love this film. Its one of the few films where a woman is the one that saves the day and isn't flopping around like an idiot. Also, Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson have real chemistry.

An All-Time Fave!
Added 11/19/2009

The Long Kiss Goodnight still stands -- after all these years -- as one of my all-time favorite action films. It has the perfect balance of close-up action, big special effects, comedic interludes, crisp writing, and human drama. It's important to bear in mind that this film was made before the spy-with-amnesia plot had become overused, before Samuel L. Jackson's on-screen persona had become stereotyped, before women had been legitimized as action heroes, and before anyone else (that I can think of) had tried a male-female "buddy" movie! The principle characters are all multidimensional, athough the villains are a bit clicheed. But, in the process of delivering an outstanding action movie, Samantha/Charly (Geena Davis) and Mitch (Samuel L. Jackson) must each face and resolve a number of down-to-earth issues about their lives, role identities, and personal character -- the kind we all eventually face, and which give this movie a humanity that's rare in the action/buddy genre.

Unfortunately, myopic critics panned the film, so it didn't produce well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. But, don't let its relative obscurity rob you of the opportunity to enjoy this trendsetting gem!

Decent film, not great
Added 9/16/2009

Geena Davis does a good job playing both personalities, and Sam "The Man" Jackson is great as Henessey, but the plot cliches take it down a couple notches.

Side note: Why does Amazon's review loathe the film, yet list it as "Essential Viewing"?

There hasn't been a review on this movie for a long time. That said you can see the movie description for the plot synopsis, I just want to add that this is an outstanding movie! One of my top 10 movies of all time! Geena Davis is awesome! A great action-comedy movie. I highly recommend you watch/own this movie.

What we need is a Special Edition . . .
Added 4/21/2009

This is one of the better action-comedy films of this decade. It has slick black humor and TONS of action. Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson make a fine duo, and they certainly kick a hell of a lot of @$$ in this movie. Expect a lot of heavy violence and some witty dialogue when watching this film.

However, I do believe that a Special Edition of The Long Kiss Goodnight is way overdue. There should be a brand-new digital transfer, with audio commentaries by the director and actors. A behind-the-scenes featurette would be nice, along with deleted scenes, bloopers, etc. It's 2009, and this recent DVD was released back in 1997. Don't you think it's time for a serious upgrade?

Anyway, great movie.

Best Pirate movie ever made.
Added 10/5/2009

I have three copies of this film. A Blu Ray, a SD DVD and on tape.
It is full of humor, excitement, and reminds one a little of an old Robin Hood type of movie.
Geena Davis is superb as the heroine, as is the rest of the cast of villains.
Frank Langella is a perfect enemy for Geena.
I guarantee you will love this movie.

More of a modern Errol Flynn
Added 9/30/2009

If you've ever seen the classic Errol Flynn pirate flicks (Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk) you'll immediately see that the writers of Cutthroat Island were fans. It's often tongue in cheek, and Frank Langella is the perfect nemesis. Sure, after watching it again it seemed a little cheesy. Some of the sword fights with Geena Davis were poorly done - more often than not it was the stunt people moving too soon. Here cocky comments - cute the first few times. Trite after a dozen. Annoying after twenty.

It's more realistic than many other pirate flicks. When fighting up in the sail rigging, the two battling captains have to keep one hand on the ropes and are obviously fighting for balance. Unlike the last Pirates flick when the fighting foes just walked around on top of the sails and masts while the ship bounced, bobbed and spun around under them, with no fear of falling.

The BluRay: 7.1 sound - sounds great! Video quality - fantastic. Extras: Minimal.

Look, for ten bucks you can't go wrong!
