Plot: After forays into film noir, thrillers, dramas, and even documentaries, director John Dahl tries the teen horror genre on for size. Paul Walker stars as Lewis Thomas, a college freshman embarking on a cross-country road trip during summer break to pick up his girlfriend Venna (Leelee Sobieski). Along for the ride is Lewis' brother Fuller (Steve Zahn), a practical joker who uses the car's CB radio to play a cruel prank on a lonely trucker known only by the handle Rusty Nail. The victim of Fuller's gag turns out to be a psychotic murderer and soon the brothers are being pursued by the relentless stalker, who gets his revenge in gruesome fashion. Joy Ride, which co-stars Matthew Kimbrough, was produced under the working title Squelch. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Rather crap

Though it seems to have come out in 02, cell phones don't exist here in a kind of crappy teen slasher pic. The 16 year old at the center is suspicious from the start, but most of the film is a build up to her worst fears coming true. The script is mediocre, so the tension isn't there and the evil guardians don't ring true either.

In Case Of Emergency: Break Glass...
Added 8/21/2009

THE GLASS HOUSE is one of the better PG-13 thrillers out there. It has some actual suspense and never stoops to being a typical teen movie. Leelee Sobieski (Joy Ride) is excellent in the role of Ruby, a girl who finds herself without parents after a fatal car crash. She and her brother (Trevor Morgan from Jurassic Park 3) must live with their godparents, Terry (Stellan "Bootstrap Bill" Skarsgard) and Erin (Diane Lane) Glass. At first, everything seems fine, until Ruby begins noticing some increasingly unsettling goings-on. Of course, this leads to dark revelations and catastrophic events! TGH is full of mystery, tension, and plenty of creepy pseudo-parenting. Skarsgard is quite convincing in his slimy persona, and Ms. Lane is dependable as always. Also, watch for Bruce Dern (Silent Running, The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant) and Kathy Baker (Edward Scissorhands) as a lawyer and a socialworker respectively...

I wanted to like this movie, I really did. I was looking for some good movies to watch and I saw this one. Eh.. not what I expected.

From the front, it looks like it'll be a super scary, awesome movie.

Undoubtedly it was good at parts, and the acting was pretty good, but... it was one of those kind of movies where you are watching the movie and you start yelling at the screen, "No! No, don't do that! Jeez, you- no! I can't believe she did that... Idiot." Like, if you know the killer's in the dark room and they go into the dark room anyways because they lost their cat or something...?

I actually found myself calling the main character an idiot more than once. When the kids (not to give away the plot) get out of the basement, they go and get the keys to the car to get away. Personally, I would have hightailed it out of there and ran as fast as possible away. Secondly, when Ruby sees (spoilers) Erin dead, wouldn't you think she'd call 911? But nope, she doesn't. Thirdly, the girl is 16 years old; she is taking a Drivers Ed class. You'd think she'd at least know a LITTLE bit about driving... in the scene where she's taking her brother away with her and it's raining, she drives like a little kid! Sure she was only in the class for a little while, and she did say she was a bad driver, but seriously?

All in all, if you and your friends wanna pop something in to watch and you feel like making fun of the character's stupid mistakes, go right on ahead and watch! We all need those movies from time to time, you know? I'm not being sarcastic when I say that, by the way.

I did give it two stars, though, because it did make me jump and gasp a few times. I always love movies that can genuinely make me gasp or jump. :) It's not a bad movie, it just could have been directed better.

More than Half Empty

"Run of the mill" was a term I kept thinking while watching THE GLASS HOUSE. By the time it reaches its CAPE FEAR finale (where the villain appears to survive everything to remain a threat), I'd lost interest in the story--mainly because the characters weren't very interesting to begin with.

Leelee Sobieski is a hot teen girl. She looks great in a bikini, looks great standing around, just looks great. But there's really nothing to her character to distinguish her from any other teenage girl. She's sympathetic because she's...hot. (She's certainly not very good at eavesdropping since she gets caught every single time).

You know what might have made this movie more interesting? Leelee actually begins to have feelings for her new guardian, Stellan Skarsgard. He charms her, pulls her in, draws her out of her depression over the death of her parents (imagine the betrayal that sets up!). But his character is so slimy and creepy that I'm surprised he wasn't wearing a hockey mask or even a black stovepipe hat with a black moustache from his first scene. Everything is so undeveloped and by-the-numbers that nothing is a surprise.

Diane Lane and Bruce Dern are around but the movie wastes their considerable talents.

When it's over, you're left with...okay...that's it, huh?

ONCE THIS MOVIE GETS STARTED, IT'S WORTH THE WATCH. THEY EVEN GIVE YOU SERVERAL DIFFERANT ENDINGS. IN MY OPINION THE ONE THEY HAD AS THE ENDING WAS THE BEST. LEAVES IT OPEN FOR AN SEQUAL FOR WHICH THEY DID. HAVENN'T SEEN IT YET. BUT I WILL SAY THIS JOY RIDE IS WHAT IT IS. ENTERTAINING AND CREEPY. YOU NEVER GET TO SEE THE VILLIN. I ENJOYED IT AND IM SURE YOU WILL.

Joy Ride DVD

For my first time watching "Joy Ride", starring Paul Walker, Leelee sobieski, and Steve Zahn this action packed thriller kept me on the edge of my seat. This movie is about 2 brothers taveling to new jersey and along the way deciding to pull a prank on a truck driver using a CB radio. One of the brothers posed as a girl and started messing around with the trucker hoping to get a good laugh. What they thought was a practical joke turned out to be completely different and causing the trucker to stalk them and make them run for their lives.

What makes this movie great is how it's not like other movies where you can probably predict what will happen next. "Joy Ride" will keep you guessing. When you think you know what will happen, something completely different occurs. The thrill of this movie how its believeable. People can take jokes too seriously and take it to drastic measures like the trucker,"Rusty Nails", in this movie.

I recommend "Joy Ride" to anyone who loves thrillers! This one will definaltely leave you wanting to see more and keep you guessing. I really enjoy horror/thriller movies and this by far is an amazing movie. I look forward to seeing the sequel to it and im sure you will too.
