Plot: Inspired by stories from the fantasy graphics magazine Heavy Metal, this five-part animated feature combines the talents of hundreds of artists and animators from 17 different countries. A glowing green orb called Loc-Nar that contains the sum total of all evil in the universe travels through space and time, spreading violence and discord in its wake. The stories that follow demonstrate Loc-Nar's malevolent presence throughout the universe. In New York in the year 2023, cabbie Harry Canyon picks up a fare who turns out to have Loc-Nar in her possession, and it turns out to be one trip he wishes that he had never made. In contemporary suburban America, a nerdy high school kid finds the orb in his backyard and is transported to a comic-book universe where he's a mighty warrior and famous spoiler of women. A robot created by an alien race falls in love with a secretary from Earth who was kidnapped by his masters, while she is at once fascinated and repelled by his sexual talents. And finally, Loc-Nar crashes into a mountain, and a world of fantasy and danger spontaneously appears in its wake, ruled by The Defender, a beautiful amazon who rides on a giant bird. The voice cast for Heavy Metal includes John Candy, Harold Ramis, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Richard Romanus, and John Vernon. The sound track features selections by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Cheap Trick, Devo, and Grand Funk Railroad. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

On one hand, "Heavy Metal" is a tough, no excuses violent and rowdy relic from a bygone un-PC era. I love it for that -- and for all of the nostalgia the artwork elicits in me. This film came out when I was about seven and was considered by older kids to be the essence of cool. There is great atmosphere here, and the film really defies all genre categorizations; it is literally like the magazine came to life and created a film wholly outside of Hollywood's spoonfed narratives and genres. And like others have noted, it seems to be the bookend to an entire decade of fantasy and science-fiction illustration. Can't help but bring a tear to the eye!

Having said that, almost all of these stories offer great atmosphere and visuals, and while most begin with a brilliant idea -- they are uniformly missing good writers to give them much impact. At about 10-15 minutes long each they all just fizzle out, making this a frustrating film. Probably the worst example of this tendency is in the WWII segment, where the only thing that happens is that dead pilots turn to zombies. There is no twist, nothing. That's it! Probably my favorite segment is the last one which involves a warrior (seen on the poster) who avenges a fallen civilization. There is some very imaginative scenery and it actually tells a real story with a beginning, middle, and end -- and she is a compelling character.

So overall, 5 stars for the nostalia and atmosphere, barely 3 stars for the anemic storylines. But this is the real deal, and has more artistic integrity than much anything else of its kind since.

I remember going to the movies watching this in the 70's. I really enjoyed seeing it again, to me it's a cult classic. The animation didn't seem as amazing as the first time I saw it years ago, I guess I've become spoiled with the present. Great music cuts enhance this immensely.

I never read any "heavy metal" mags, but this movie was a really good depiction of ""heavy"". Action, humor, great animation, a plot that kept me interested, this movie had it all. I would highly recommend it. Greg, [...]
