Plot: The compilation film If These Walls Could Talk consists of three short films that each deal with the controversial issue of abortion. Although each of the stories is set in a different decade, the unifying element (aside from the subject matter) is that all three transpire in the same house. The first story stars Demi Moore as the widow of a soldier killer in combat. She becomes pregnant and does not feel it would be morally appropriate to have the baby. Because it is the '50s, she must attempt to secure an illegal abortion. The second story, set in the '70s, stars Sissy Spacek as a mother of a struggling family. Having successfully raised four children on a meager income, Spacek's character must now decide if she should seek an abortion after finding out she is expecting a fifth. The final story takes place in the '90s. Anne Heche portrays a grad student who crosses protestors' picket lines in order to consult a doctor (Cher) about having an abortion. The first two parts, 1952 and 1974, were directed by Nancy Savoca, and the last part, 1996, was helmed by Cher, in her directorial debut. If These Walls Could Talk aired originally on HBO. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

The Bottom Line:

This triptych about abortion in three different eras in American history doesn't reach for the stars but it succeeds in its modest goal of discussing abortion through the women involved rather than about some party line; If These Walls Could Talk sometimes suffers from flat and uninspired direction but it's a story worth watching.

I like this movie, it has a lot of controversial things going on in it with a lot of big hollywood names. I wish it went more into details about the decisions that were made. All in all a decent movie to kill time.

Overall, a pretty good movie

Normally I wouldn't have picked this video up and watched it. It was a requirement for a humanities class I was taking. I watched a few diffrent movies about abortion and I would say that this one was closer to the bottom of the list of favorites. I think my problem was that it moved through the stories too quickly. I did end up learning a little bit about abortion and how it can effect more than the woman having the abortion. Overall, I would say that it was a good movie.

The DVD I received was in excellent condition and arrived quicker than quoted. Thanks for an excellent product!

"If These Walls Could Talk"

Powerfully Poignant

Amos Lassen

A trilogy of stories set in the same house; "If These Walls Could Talk" was a special on HBO but is now available on DVD. It spans 40 years and looks at various women and moral crises over pregnancies and the choice for abortion, One story takes place in 1952 when abortion was illegal, another in 1974 when a woman realizes that she cannot handle other child in addition to the four she already has and the third in 1996 when a college student opts for an abortion without realizing the consequences of going through one.
What the film shows is that woman's choice for abortion is not an east decision. There are many reasons for unexpected pregnancy. In each of the three short films, we have a woman faced with that decision and we get a look at both internal and externals forces a women must contend with before she makes the ultimate decision. The film disturbs and it plays on the emotions. Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek and Anne Heche all give wonderful performances as women who are at odds with their family members, with friends and with society over the situations that they are in. Each of the separate films is also an excellent example of what goes through a woman's mind. This is not for a person who is light of heart but this an excellent film with a wonderful cast.
