Plot: Academy Award-winning Exorcist director William Friedkin scuttles deep into the darkest recesses of the traumatized human psyche with this tale of a lonely bartender haunted by the long-ago disappearance of her young son, and the paranoia that emerges when she enters into a tentative relationship with a deeply disturbed drifter. Adapted from the off-Broadway play by Tracy Letts, Bug centers on Agnes (Ashley Judd), who tends bar alongside pal R.C. (Lynn Collins), and has recently moved into a shoddy roadside motel in hopes of avoiding her menacing and recently paroled ex-husband, Jerry (Harry Connick Jr.). Upon making the acquaintance of subdued former soldier Peter (Michael Shannon, repeating his stage role), a veteran of the first Gulf War, Agnes finally senses that things are looking up. Quietly charming despite his melancholy aura, Peter soon reveals to Agnes that he contracted a bug while serving in the Middle East, and that it may have been deliberately administered as part of a secret military medical experiment. Convinced that the microscopic insects are quickly multiplying just under the surface of his skin and that they have now infected Agnes as well, Peter soon descends into a psychotic rage as he resorts to increasingly desperate measures to purge himself of the offending subdermal arthropods. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I really enjoyed this film! If you didnt like it its prolly because you were expecting something else or you just didnt undestand it, therefore you couldnt get into it. When my brother first mentioned this movie i didnt really put any thought into trying to see it...dunno why but it just didnt catch me at first. He kept mentioning it and saying he wanted to get the dvd but couldnt find it (i always tell him to go to amazon cause you can find pretty much any flick here for cheap) He eventually ended up catching it on movies on demand and started talking about it again so i said ok im gonna put it on my netflix.

After doing so he kept asking if i had seen it yet so i decided to put it at the top of my list & Im glad i did! There are a few scenes that had me laughing my arse off and rewinding "HE'S A MACHINE!!!! A MACHINE!!!!" stab! stab! and when ashley judd starts going over what prolly happed to her kid and how the bugs arrives, and that leads to "IM THE SUPER MOTHER BUG!!!" GREAT MOVIE & HALARIOUS! Like i said in the intro, If you didnt like it its prolly because you were expecting something else or you just didnt undestand it, therefore you couldnt get into it. I got it in the mail last night and will be watching again before sending back. Then ordering it for the dvd collection.

& now back to work I go!

Strong performances can't save this film
Added 10/28/2009

I have a theory... If you can think up a conspiracy, it probably already exist in some form. Bug pushes that to the extreme in detailing the popular conspiracies of the modern world. Bildebergs, Tuskegee, Tim McVeigh, Gulf War Syndrome, AIDS etc.

It is a psycho-drama that just gradually fades into a mental health tragedy that is more of a downer than a lesson in life. Great performances by Ashley Judd and Harry Conic Jr. can't save this depressing movie.

This is, without a doubt, one of the dumbest and worst movies I have ever seen. Judd (a lonely, divorced woman somewhere in the southwest) is attracted to a drifter (Michael Shannon) who is convinced that the government "bugged him" with aphids that have the ability to multiply and seemingly infect other human beings. After a night of sex, we are led to believe the Judd becomes "affected" with Shannon's paranoid images and philosophy. Her ex-husband (Connick, Jr.) is no help and when a doctor tries to intervene and help Shannon with his delusions he stabs the doctor to death.

That brings us to the ending. After much bantering and ranting, Judd and Shannon douse themselves with gasoline and set themselves on fire after some worthless diatribe about aphids, mother aphids, host aphids, worker aphids and some other mindless stupidity after that.

It's no wonder that Amazon has copies that have been seen and offered at ONE CENT. Believe me, don't buy this worthless, totally illogical and ill-conceived movie and save yourself the penny (plus postage and handling).

I saw it on TMC and spared the expense. Apparently Judd and Connick need some dough...or else they would not have made such a worthless pile of junk.
