Plot: Filmed on location in Montreal and New York, The Bone Collector is a suspense thriller that combines Rear Window and Seven. Two cops on the trail of a brutal serial killer must see as one, act as one, and think as one before the next victim falls. Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is an intelligent forensics detective who was paralyzed in the line of duty. The author of several books, he has a keen eye for detail and nose for clues that have made him a legend in the law enforcement community. Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is a street-smart policewoman in her twenties. On her last day as a street cop, before being transferred to a desk job, Amelia discovers a badly mutilated corpse. Rhyme is asked to investigate the case, but he declines. To him, it is an open-and-shut case not worth his time. But when he takes a close look at the evidence, he is intrigued, as the photos reveal complex messages in their details. The lunatic, who might be a taxi driver (a Scorsese allusion), amuses himself by paying homage to legendary murders in his own gruesome acts. Amelia is assigned to assist Rhyme, and she must be the eyes and ears of the quadriplegic detective. And they must capture the killer before he strikes again. Written by Jeremy Iacone and based on a book of the same title by Jeffrey Deaver, The Bone Collector was directed by the Australian thriller specialist Phillip Noyce, who directed such films as Clear and Present Danger and Dead Calm. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide

Not as forceful as Ironside but more charm
Added 10/6/2009

Fictional detectives have come in all shapes, sizes, and colors; and they have borne a range of handicaps which, as the authors would have it, have led them to cultivate other characteristics which allows them to be first class investigators. Former detective Washington suffers from being all but totally paralyzed for most of the film. Fortunately, he has a cadre of highly talented assistants, the most useful of them being beautiful and a police officer. I could have done without the few shots of brutality inflicted upon victims but, other than that, it is the equivalent of a movie special of the Ironsides TV show although Washington has forced upon him more immobility than had Raymond Burr. Nevertheless, he is effective in the role and makes the most of its limitations. The film will not rank among the best in anything but it does hold ones attention for its almost two hours duration. Expect competent TV and you will probably enjoy it, expect Hitchcock and you will be disappointed.

The book was great, but the movie wasn't that good.
If it was more graffic that would have been the ticket.
Jolie's performance is bizzar.Occasional NY city accent.

I love to watch this movie! I am a huge Angie fan and this is enjoyable because it is before Agalina was known as the hardcore action hero she is now. Some of the best acting in this movie is done in the silent moments(by both Jolie and Washington).Very complex acting and even though it is suspenseful it is heartfelt as well. A keeper.

Great performances from Washington, O'Neill, and Latifah . . . and that's about it

This movie could have been so much better, but they just had to ruin it, didn't they? With the exception of very fine performances from Denzel Washington, Ed O'Neill, and Queen Latifah, the rest of the film just falls flat. The plot seems so ridiculous that I can't help but look away. Angelina Jolie's acting is below average, but she did her best. The twist ending wasn't very disappointing, but it did fall flat because of its exaggerated (or lack of) suspense. I didn't really enjoy watching this thriller. There are better ones like Se7en, and The Usual Suspects. Watch those two, and you'll see how a real thriller should be.

The ending rates a NO STAR

The Bone Collector. What a great idea for a movie. Then cast Denzel Washington in the lead. PERFECT. This had all the makings of a great movie. The acting was good, and the storyline was interesting. What happened?? The ending. When you invest the time, energy and money to create a movie that suckers in viewers, you should have a slam-bang finish. This one failed miserably. It broke the biggest rule of the Who-dun-it mysteries. You NEVER make the villan someone that the reader, or in this case, movie-viewer could never in their wildest dreams have figured out. In the end, we have the villan - someone who amounted to, at best, a walk on role up to the point he was revealed. It leaves the viewer saying, "HUH?" And the reason he wanted to kill our hero? He wanted to make him suffer for some deed he had done prior -- which was never revealed or discussed in the movie to that point. The laughable part was his rationale for wanting to kill him - he wanted him to suffer for what he had done to him. Ok, so kill him - then what? Its over. The Denzel character was a paraplegic, for Pete's sake. He suffered from seizures, etc. How could death be more suffering than that? I would have thought that the villan would have been MORE than satisfied to watch this daily suffering. In the end it was lame, lame, lame. Such a shame, too, when it had so much potential.
