Plot: A woman is taken on a voyage to the other side of sanity in this moody thriller. Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) is a clinical psychologist who works alongside her husband, Dr. Doug Grey (Charles S. Dutton), in the mental ward of a top security prison, where Miranda has been devoting much of her attention to a clever but deeply disturbed murderer named Chloe (Penélope Cruz), who shares gruesome tales of torture and violence that may or may not be based in fact. One night, Miranda has a hideous nightmare in which a chance meeting with a strange young girl leads to a terrifying journey into madness. Once she wakes, however, Miranda discovers that the real horror has just begun -- Doug has been brutally murdered, and the evidence points to Miranda as the prime suspect. She soon finds herself a patient in the same facility where she once treated others, and finds that her claims of innocence and sanity do little to convince Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.), the psychologist assigned to her case. Gothika marked the American debut of acclaimed and controversial French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Gothika (Widescreen Edition) (2003)-Not Alone!

Gothika (2003) was an interesting film that I rate at three to four stars. I remember first hearing about this movie when it was being advertised on billboards in Manhattan. These made a visual impression on me causing me to make a mental note to see this film. By the time I followed up the film must have left theaters making me think it was not well received. I subsequently saw the DVD and thought it was an interesting film making several well taken points along its fanciful way concerning the advantage that can be taken of the loss of credibility of mental patients as witnesses to a true crime.

The tale was a ghost story, but never entirely clear about what was real and what was imagined since we watched it through the eyes of a person believed to be criminally insane. Visually, I felt it had good atmosphere, was well filmed, nicely acted out, and rapidly paced leaving no time for looking back. The sets for the insane asylum were also very effective, convincing and frightening. There were enough blinking lights filmed to throw many people into a seizure (and give me a headache) which also probably added to the audiences feeling of being on edge. I think this was a good horror story and you may look at the reviews of others if you want to know what the story was about in any detail. By the way, the color and lighting was monochromatic blue for most scenes in the asylum, just like the billboard and DVD jacket.

Disc Freezes & 2 Movies!?!?

It got here in plenty of time, but by the time I watched it, I was sad knowing it was too late to return it. The disc froze the end of one chapter into the beginning of the next at a real integral part of the movie! I also wasn't expecting two movies in one when I got Queen of the Damned on the flip side, but hey I'll never complain about a free movie...

"Gothika" doesn't seem to be a fitting title for this film, but the story truly is gothic. After a car crash, Dr. Miranda Grey (Berry) awakens a prisoner in the forensic mental hospital where she formerly worked. She's accused of killing her husband and boss (Dutton), but cannot recall.

This is a very atmospheric and tense thriller. One of Berry's best performances to date and haunting to say the least. Strongly recommend you do not watch this on a dark and stormy night.
