Plot: One man wronged by a racist law enforcement system takes a highly unusual route to street justice in this bizarre, expressive urban drama. Charles (Marlo Monte) is a pimp and drug dealer doing a brisk business in vice around the ghettoes of Los Angeles, but he crosses the line when he has an affair with the wife of a racist police detective. The cuckolded detective frames Charles for a murder he didn't commit (the judge presiding over the case, a regular customer of Charles' prostitutes, acts in cahoots with the police in the frame-up), but not before the cop tries to exact a more personal vengeance against Charles by castrating him. After a harrowing stay in prison, Charles comes back to his old neighborhood a very different man; he gets a job and moves in with Carmen (Reatha Grey), a former working girl he's fallen in love with. But Charles hasn't forgotten the indignities of life behind bars or the attack that nearly cost him his manhood, and he begins seeking out the men who wronged him, settling the score using a deadly trick he learned while in lockup. Definitely not your ordinary '70s blaxploitation feature, Soul Vengeance (released theatrically as Welcome Home, Brother Charles) was one of three feature films Jamaa Fanaka wrote, produced, and directed while studying film production at U.C.L.A. (The other two were Black Sister's Revenge, also known as Emma Mae, and the first installment in Fanaka's popular Penitentiary series). ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Soul Vengence DVD is OK

I know that it's an old DVD but the quality of the DVD wasn't what I expected. The movie was the way I remembered though.

Only one good part of the movie

I love to watch old blaxpoitation films, but this one was not as interesting as the description made it sound. I had to fight myself to remain interested during the first 40 minutes, but things picked up in the second half. The only worthwhile part of the movie is when the main character kills someone with his penis.

worst movie Ever Ever Ever Ever!

I'm not sure what these other people are talking or even thinking about this horrible trash that is this film. Before I give it to this flick let me start off about the films from this period. I love and own several films from this era Foxy Brown, Truck Turner, Slaughter, Slaughter's big ripoff and of Course Superfly, The Mack and The dolemite collection. All great films with a ton of cheese cinema classics. This film belongs into another genre all to itself, it's horribly written, directed and acted. There is no continuity and the plot is all over the place! What's worse is the quality of the film is horrendous even for something of this age it appears it was recorded using a betamax home video camera. I would suggest you do not waste your money or listen to the reviews of anyone who states this film was worth a watch you're better off daydreaming. Anyone who could give this a film a thumbs up had to be in the film or trying to unload a copy on amazon. I stumbled across this film and was shocked that I never heard of it and bought it due to the excellent reviews it had. After five minutes I knew I was ripped off by 30 minutes I wanted to toss it out of the window. I gave this film no stars but I wish Amazon let you give a finger rating to films one could imagine what finger I would give this turd. Gave it one star because I had no choice.

Don't Wast Your Time...

Don't believe the hype! This film is boring and dull as dirt. I love films of this period/genre, but this one has no redeeming value. If you're simply waiting to see the infamous "prop" -- you're in for a disappointment: it appears (only once!) during the final five minutes of the film, and even then it's non-eventful and (excuse the pun) anti-climactic. The story is poorly conceived, written and executed, and overall the film brings nothing new or fresh to the table for this type of film. Trust me, you've seen it all before in much better films of the period. This dull and dated dud isn't worth your time -- avoid it at all costs! Check out the director's under-rated and almost ignored gem, "Black Sister's Revenge" instead -- it'll surprise you.

This movie is also known as Welcome Home, Brother Charles. The trailer can be found on YouTube. I normally don't rate something before I see it, but the trailer for the movie looks so hilarious I couldn't resist!
