Plot: Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called The Opti-grab, a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the guess-your-weight man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the Opti-grab has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

My story? I was born a poor HD DVD.....

Huh? I am not a bum. I'm a jerk. I once had wealth, power, and the love of a beautiful woman. Now I only have two things: my friends and... uh... my thermos. Huh? My story? Okay. It was never easy for me. I was born a poor HD DVD.....

The HD DVD version of The Jerk is a good update over the DVD since it's widescreen and has a better than average soundtrack of Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1, but really my only complaint is there were only 4 really sucky special features which were all in standard def. So, that's why it only got 4 stars.

Otherwise I watched it for all the comedy, and trust me you will not be disappointed unless you are so unhumorous like my grandma.

The Bottom Line - If you want to have a good laugh get this movie!

Was this ever funny?
Added 6/22/2009

I hadn't seen this since my early teens; the year that it was released 30 years ago. I suppose that I hadn't thought to watch it again since then. But, I now know why: I rented it earlier this week with my 15 yr. old son, as we were trying to pick out a flick that might entertain. My pick, my fault: this movie is so over abundantly unfunny that I felt like I had betrayed my son. Thank gawd he's a gracious human being.
Was this movie's humor really legitimate at some time; is it still? Was it necessary to release a 26th anniversary edition? Or, was that out of the studio's feeling of some "loyal obligation"? Seriously, Fans: watch it at least everyday for a couple of weeks and then honestly ask yourself whether this comedy wasn't taking advantage the movie viewing public during Steve Martin's hey-days, rather than putting out legitimate comedy. I can't remember a time that his movies ever caused me to laugh. I have a vague memory that `Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid' may have... but, I don't wanna chance it. He was great in 'The Spanish Prisoner', however, which is a thriller/drama. Check that one out instead.
