Plot: Set in Norway and Scotland, Aberdeen is a road movie that is as concerned with the geography of the heart as that of a topographical map. Kaisa (Lena Headey) is an ambitious lawyer who has just celebrated her recent promotion by having dominant sex with a man whose name she has no interest in learning. When her estranged mother, Helen (Charlotte Rampling), whom she hasn't been in contact with for a decade, calls her up to tell her that she is dying of cancer, Kaisa is faced with her mother's request to track down her divorced husband, Tomas (Stellan Skarsgard). A raging drunk, Tomas has been frequenting the pubs of Norway for a number of years, and Kaisa, after some initial hesitation, sets out for Oslo to find him. When she is finally reunited with Tomas, his drunkenness prevents them from being allowed on the flight back to Aberdeen, where her mother is hospitalized. Kaisa and Tomas embark on an overland journey that takes them across Norway and on a ferry to England, with Tomas drinking constantly and Kaisa discovering something that may be love with a self-effacing truck driver (Ian Hart). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Watch it at least twice

This is a fun movie- and makes a lot more dramtic sense than you might think. It has unexpected twists. Yes there is the fantasy of going back to fix what went wrong in a relationship- but even though the fix happens the result is different from what is expected. But it is only on the second viewing that I caght the idea that the reason for the 'time travel' was to enable our main character to escape from 'enchantment'- and that the analogy was a literary one drawn from Don Quixote. In a way the real theme is about what happens when one is willing to chnage and to learn. Does our hero get what he desires in the end? NO- and yes.

Love with a Twist of Fate
Added 11/20/2008

If you love Lena Heady and Penelope Cruz as much as I do, you will love this film. It is a realistic look at love in it's purest innocence, taken to the edge when fate steps in as an unstoppable force. Lena and Penelope are upclose and personal, holding their multifaceted emotions in check as only goddesses can do. They hold their own as their mutual lover comically unravels his affectations and steps up to the plate of true love.

Nice little gem

This is a very enjoyable romantic movie. It's about a guy named Victor who gets a second chance to make his relationship work though a magic spell, only to have it all fall apart anyway. Along the way, he meets someone new (the Penelope Cruz character). The ending is especially interesting. On the one hand, the lead up makes it seem like he might end up with his original girlfriend, only to have him reject her and stay with the new girl. However, the same people who helped Victor magically have a second chance find his rejected girlfriend, thus hinting that it might not be the end of the story.

Great Film, Lena Headey is Sublime

Great film, one of those rare finds...It is a love story but not a "chick flick" at all...a fair view from both male and female eyes regarding love and infidelity....thought provoking but not re: morality...just life and human mistakes and redemption...perfectly done
Should not be missed!

Terrific Movie!

What a great movie. Lena Headey does a marvelous job and really shows her fine acting skills. The story is compelling and gutsy in its raw, stirring, emotional journey. Great writing, great direction and great acting!

Excellent acting & writing

It started with infatuation of Diana Rigg, Olivia Newton-John, Sheena Easton and Nicole Kidman. Now, Lena Headey is the heir apparent to my list of fantasy women with British accents. Oh yeah, she is an excellent actress as well.

In many ways the movie was depressing. However, if the writers and directors were trying to portray a dysfunctional addicted family... they succeeded brilliantly. In an era of man bashing the interjection of Clive (Ian Hart) as the Good Samaritan truck driver was refreshing.

The ending leaves you pondering the final outcome ... ala "The Lady or the Tiger". All in all, the movie is worth the time and money.

Could have been a hidden treasure, but not nearly serious enough; a "C-"

This is one of the more disappointing movies I've seen in recent years. I was expecting an intense and/or intimate study of the relationship between these two characters but there is just too much preposterous and unnecessary action in this movie. Lena Headley will certainly hold your attention (both for her acting and down-right attractiveness) and Stellan Skarsgard (a fine actor from what I can make of this and 'Good Will Hunting') fulfills the requirements of the script, but that's the problem: the script is more about moving the plot forward and never takes itself seriously enough. Having had a personal history with alcoholism in my own family and having actually grown up in the Aberdeen area until I was sixteen added to my disappointment regarding what this film could have been - it was nowhere close tonally to its potential. On top of all that, I came to find out that the filmmakers never even shot in Aberdeen and used other Scottish cities for substitute footage instead - so what was the point of calling it 'Aberdeen' other than a tie-in to Skarsgard's oil-industry background? Again, a "disappointment" on numerous levels.
