Plot: Joe Dante's box-office fantasy Gremlins had barely left American cinemas before Charles Band's B-movie factory, Empire Pictures, rushed out this cheap knockoff. While Dante's film benefited from the director's wry sense of humor and the high-concept clout of executive producer Steven Spielberg, Band's tawdry little creature feature boasts lower production values than a high-school haunted-house fundraiser. The title monsters are a pack of obnoxious demons -- enacted by a handful of rubber dolls covered with KY jelly -- summoned up by the metaphysical shenanigans of college student Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) after he discovers his late father's occult paraphernalia at the family estate. Jonathan later invites a group of annoying friends to participate in an all-night party, during which he intends to perform an elaborate parlor trick -- actually a satanic ritual through which he hopes to acquire his father's supernatural powers. This doesn't sit well with Dad, who bursts violently from his grave (a nice touch) to have a chat with his wayward son while legions of ghoulies (well, four or five, anyway) descend upon the revelers. Considering the entire production revolves around the antics of the ghoulies themselves, the alleged puppetry involved is laughable -- the inarticulate puppets do little more than open drooling mouths full of pointy teeth before offscreen stagehands fling them at the heads of cast members. The film's main points of interest lie with the supporting cast, which includes Bobbi Bresee as a supernatural seductress (sporting an eight-foot tongue!) and Eraserhead's John Nance as a bizarre gardener. Somehow, this became one of Empire's top moneymakers, spawning no less than three sequels. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Flush this movie down the toilet

I've always hated this movie. To make my point clear of why I hate this movie let give you an example of what is wrong with it. What is Gremlins about? Mischievous creatures that multiply in numbers and wreak havoc in town. What is Critters about. Evil and ravenous furballs that wreak havoc in a small town. What is Ghoulies about? Some punk a** wizard(played by Peter Liapis) who wants to ressurect his dead father. My point exactly. Why have a movie called Ghoulies and the creatures it is named after are an afterthought(they appear in the movie 54 MINUTES LATER!!). It makes no sense. And they do appear they are limited to brief moments of screen time to cause mayhem. Before they appear the movie is pretty dull. Look, I know what to expect from a movie of this nature. All I ask is for a movie that's faithful to its title. If a movie is called Attack of The Killer Locusts then that is what I want to see. I dont want to see some backward wizard who is so much of a creep that he even attempted a ritual while spending quality time with his girl in the sack(what a jerk!).Ghoulies 2 and 3 turned out to be better than this snoozer so stick with those and avoid this slop.

What I think of ghoulies
Added 3/14/2005

I really like the movie ghoulies. I thought it was very dark and magical. I feel it didn't have that much of a story about ghoulies, it was more about black magic. I always wondered about the ending. What ever happened to those three people? When I saw the next movie ghoulies 2 there was no mention of the first group of people. It seems each of the movies had a different story line. I would have liked the movie better, if some of the scenes were during the day, rather than it always being dark and inside the house.

Great Cheesy Movie of the 80's
Added 1/9/2005

I give this movie a 5-star rating not because it was scary but because it is one of those cheesy-1980's films that you just have to watch.

To summarize the plot: Evil Satanic Sorcerer fails to sacrifice his own son to Lucifer so kills the mother instead by ripping her heart out and banishing the child. The Sorcerer dies a "horrible death" and somehow the son, Jonathan, learns that he has inherited the house.

Jonathan and his girlfriend, Rebecca, are both still in college. Jonathan drops out for a semester to fix up the house. In truth, he gets really obsessed with the black magick ritual books that he finds and decides to try them out. His eyes turn green, he calls up the ghoulies, a few subservient dwarfs, and even gets Rebecca to come back after she left him because of the black magick rituals.

Jonathan gets power hungry and performs a master ritual which accidentally raises his dad back to life. Incidentally, the evil sorcerer was buried in the yard.

Evil Sorcerer Dad kills all of Jonathan's friends and takes control of the ghoulies.

The Evil Sorcerer vows to take Jonathan's life but then the big twist!

You'll just have to buy this one to see the ending now, right?

Ghoulish Amusement...
Added 3/29/2003

A
young inheritor named Jonathan comes into possession of a stately mansion which contains many secrets, inclusive of those kept by his mysterious father, who said to be involved with The Occult, who ran his cult from within the recesses of his house.

The movie begins with a scene of ritual taking place, complete with a huge Pentagram behind The Altar, and a Goetic sigil of Belial on the mantle, in which an infant sacrifice is to take place, which is actually that of The Sorcerer's son, because he fears that one day he will turn to the light and grow to overtake him. He commands one of the robed cultists to come forth with the infant, but she dares disobey, considering the horror of murdering a child; The Sorcerer enraged, telekinetically tears the heart from her chest. He then orders another member to leave his midst after an energy field surrounding the boy resists the death-strike. And so the kindly, though somewhat 'touched' old man sets to raise him as his own unto manhood. Upon maturity, he sets to explore the mansion, and begins finding elements of his father's legacy - in the library, books on Black Magic, ritual tools, personal artifacts such as several medallions, a conjuring staff, and a robe. Bit by bit his natural interests beckon him to experiment with The Dark Arts, with a cover desire to "know what his father was all about", whenever his newlywed wife bids him to be more reticent in uncovering the nefarious rites. But his curiosity drives him on - and then he discovers The Ritual Chambre, and begins making the necessary preparations which yields him almost immediate Power, most noticeable by his glowing green eyes, which in this case, denotes his oneness with The Forces of Darkness. His wife becomes increasingly frightened by his evilution until finally, she decides to leave when he devotes his life to the persuit of The Occult rites. But he invokes his two imps from a Magic Circle to do his bidding, and she is consequently under his complete control.

Next, he invites a few of his friends to attend a feast and revery. Two fool-hearty stoners, a pretentious and 'cocky' guy named Dick {but you can call him "Dick"}, and two vapid girls.

But there was a purpose for them all being there that night beyond the mere dinner and party. They are all to take the place of those cultists for the Necromantic summoning of The Master Warlock. They are all placed under a spell, various imps {"ghoulies"} are called forth, and with everyone's united call, The Sorcerer is brought up from the grave located on the property, which displays a really nice gravestone with a Pentagram crowning it. Afterwards, the spell is temporarily lifted, and they are prepared by going down to the basement as sort of a party ruse, likened playing with a Ouija board for kicks, and Jonathan decides to open a book to conduct a rite from therein, but what they do not know, is this is yet another preparatory procedure to place them in the proper frame of mind of what is to come. A triangle is drawn upon the floor, and the ubiquitous ceremonial magician blindlight garbage of calling forth the name of jehovah in hebrew inunciated 'J H V H' {"joh-heh-vau-heh"} turning clockwise, but of course, the group do not take it seriously, and mock with such things as 'the hokey-pokey', and one of the moronic girls even screams in jest. Quite a pathetic lot. After waiting a little while, it is determined that nothing will occur, so they all decide to return to the kitchen for more beer and marijuana. Unbeknownst to them, the ghoulies appear in the conjuring trigram and are released to roam the grounds.

Bit by bit, the 'ghoulies', which are essentially elementals, manifest one by one to cause havoc and spill the sacrificial blood until all of the guests are transformed into spechtrous participants in a hellish ceremony. The Master Warlock then sets out to reclaim his position as Prime Magician. First by entering the house with a mighty yell to stir the ethers, and one final sacrifice to bring him fully into the flesh, for at this point he resembles a decaying zombie - but with the application of a little transmogrification, a willing victim comes along - "Dick" - the strutting, boorish macho-man fooled by the Sorcerer's illusion of that of a beautiful seductress, followed by a deep kiss - the next thing which occurs, is he finds himself with a tentacle-tongue wrapped around his neck - and the next sacrifice is taken. So he is restored to full vitality, and heads straight to The Altar, where he reclaims his rightful place as Lord of The Manor.
So father and son eventually come face to face - a memorable line spoken by The Sorcerer comes to the fore - "I must admit you show promise, but at your age, I was much...better." A line I know too well. The battle is on, and the son is defeated, as he slowly sinks into The Abyss, but is rescued surprisingly by The Old Man in full ritual garb, who takes over the battle, so he and The Warlock battle Magically until someone is victorious. I will leave it up to the viewer to discern who, for it is actually unclear.

Considered a "B-Movie" by the masses, Ghoulies is highly entertaining, replete with occult themes, and quite comical at times, which makes it a favorite. Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P. conducted a portion of the soundtrack for the sequal, which, in this reviewer's opinion, is not as amusing as this first film gem.

How could we not watch the film that inspired Hobgoblins?
Added 10/14/2009

With Octoberfest horror film number 14 it was about time to go with a nice creature feature. Having such a huge variety of b creature flicks to choose from we decided to go with somewhat of a cult classic known as Ghoulies from 1985. Really combining many essentials like killer hand puppets, horrible 80's actors, and a couple of dwarfs (considered elves to us of course)is what gave it the green light. Not to mention we believe this had to be the inspiration for the creation of Hobgoblins four years later. So due to this thought we will be taking a different approach with this review by awarding one of these two films king of the killer puppet b.

Ghoulies starts off with Jonathan (who looks like a b Eric Roberts if that's possible) and his lady Rebeca who are college kids. When Jonathan inherits his deceased sorcerer fathers house he takes the semester off to fix it up. Only he finds some black magic books and becomes obsessed with the blacks arts. Long story short, he throws a sweet 80's party and plays a little game with his good time buddies bringing the ghoulies and a couple elf servants out from their dark depths. The rest is filled with b hand puppet action and his father coming back from the dead to take care of biz. Naturally despite the evil Dad's powers, Johnathan and his buddies somehow manage to get through the ordeal to never to be heard from again amongst the film community.

As far as ghoulies goes it was about what we were expecting. Very entertaining especially from the overwhelming 80's vibe going on. There were a handful of dull parts but was pretty fun with moments of boozing, reefer smoking, great possessed green eye effects, elf servants, AC Slater like sunglasses with windshield wiper blades, and very cheap creature action. For anyone to bash it is somewhat ridiculous for the sheer fact of the films basis. You should know what you're gonna get just from the description and cover. Now for who will reign supreme is a tough question. See Hobgoblins is a Sid favorite, but only the MST3K version. If that version goes up against Ghoulies it wins hands down. But to be fair and just take the original films themselves Ghoulies wins hands down for killer puppet b. It was a close race, but the elves gave it the edge. How could it not?

Who puts up the money for this stuff?
Added 3/26/2009

When you hear the name "Ghoulies" or simply glance at the DVD cover art, your first instinct would probably be that this movie is some third rate knockoff of Gremlins or Critters, and to a very small extent you may be right. But you would also be surprised that Ghoulies is largely a tale revolving around black magic and satanic rituals with the "ghoulies" simply being an afterthought. Either way it doesn't quite matter because the movie is terrible in too many ways to name.

We begin with a wizard sacrificing his son in a satanic ritual, only to have the mother intervene and save the child which prompts the removal of her heart. Fast forward many years later where the child from the ritual, now a grown college-age man, has inherited the estate of his father. After cleaning up a bit around the house, he comes across numerous books about black magic, and in a matter of days becomes completely absorbed in his father's world of evil. After performing a number of rituals from the books in his basement, he conjures up the ghoulies, small vicious little creatures that serve as his minions. In one of the strangest events I've ever seen in a movie, he also conjures two midgets dressed as vikings that also exist to serve him (?). As he delves even deeper he eventually takes things too far and raises his zombified father from the dead. He must then attempt to stop his father from reincarnating himself through his own son...Or something like that...

It's very difficult to understand how anyone could have thought that it was a good idea to make this movie as it is thoroughly mediocre and barely even lives up to what its title suggests it is about. The ghoulie effects are just god awful and look about as realistic as something you would find in a department store around Halloween. As far as the acting goes, just imagine a group of people getting together and having an over-acting competition. Believe me, there would be no clear-cut winner here. I think the main offense that Ghoulies commits is that it takes itself completely seriously. Had it taken a more tongue-in-cheek approach, then perhaps it could have gone on to be more reputable as a b-movie.

As far as Ghoulies 2 goes, I saw it half a life time ago and all I remember is a typical stalk and kill at a carnival. At least it lives up to what the title suggest sbetter than the original. However I'm only reviewing this double DVD set because there is no individual release for Ghoulies.

As it is, Ghoulies is a laugh-out-loud bad piece of 80's horror. This is easily a one star movie, but when taking into consideration the entertainemnt it unintentionally provides, I think another star is warranted. On a more interesting note the cast features Mariska Hargitay of Law and Order SVU as well as Jack Nance of Eraserhead, although their roles are considerably small. Recommended for a good laugh, or if you have ever had a desire to see two midgets in viking outfits hitting puppets with sticks. For horror, avoid.
