Plot: A psychiatrist treats a most unusual patient, only to find that the doctor is the one who gains the most from their sessions in this philosophical romantic comedy. A young man in a mask and cape (played by Johnny Depp) is standing atop a billboard, threatening to jump. When the potential suicide is finally talked down, he's brought to a psychiatric facility where after one doctor washes his hands of the case, he's placed under the supervision of Dr. Jack Mickler (Marlon Brando), an aging psychiatrist soon to retire. The patient informs Mickler that he is actually the great lover Don Juan, who has seduced over 1,500 women, but has fallen into a deep depression after being unable to win the hand of the woman of his dreams. Mickler has ten days to work with Don Juan, after which he will either be released on medication or committed to a long-term stay in a mental hospital. As Mickler talks with the young man, who speaks rapturously of the art of love, the doctor finds that his philosophies are helping to kick start his failing relationship with his wife (Faye Dunaway), and he slowly becomes convinced that his patient might really be Don Juan after all. Don Juan DeMarco's theme song, Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman, became a major hit for singer and songwriter Bryan Adams; after working with Marlon Brando on this film, Johnny Depp cast the legendary actor in a key supporting role in his directorial debut, The Brave. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This is a wonderful 'sleeper' movie for Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando. The music by Brian Adams is a wonderful effect added to the subtle acting nuances by both of these great actors and their supporting cast. The story line is simple but poetically displayed.

Depp Is Absolutely Exquisite In This!!--Brando and Dunaway Are Great Too!

It's not a secret that I am a HUGE fan of Johnny Depp's body of work!
The guy just has an aura around him that draws you in and holds you
when he comes on the screen!--Nobody in the last 20 yrs has such a
diversity and consistently high quality level of excellence in their
work than Johnny Depp, with the exceptions of maybe Sean Penn or Brad Pitt...
But even then, nobody has merged the artistic with the commericially sucessful
as well as he has...BAR NONE!! (Okay, enough J.D. gushing!!)

This movie is a great romantic comedy that will have you all wrapped up
into it in no time! I hadn't seen this in about 9 yrs and put it on
this past weekend when there was nothing on...WOW!! (-:
Johnny Depp plays a guy who really thinks he's the legendary lover Don Juan Demarco!
He adopts a fake accent as well as all the affectations of the chivalrous rogue
and his sex appeal, smoldering looks and charm take it to another level!
He is sent to a therapist, played admirably by the legendary Marlon Brando,
who tries to help him find out who he is, but in the process, it is
Depp's character who helps to open Brando's character and well as
Faye Dunaway's character (which she plays admirably as well) to
an unexpected level of sensitivity, sensuality and a beautiful
view of the world and life that they'd never thought of!
This is not a dirty, in-your-face kind of hit the sack flick!
It's a very romantic, funny and sensual approach that will have
you feeling great about love and life at the end!
Yet another great Johnny Depp film to add to your collection.

I don't like Johnny Depp. Have never felt he was truly a good actor and was too blown up by media hype and a lot of mindless teeny-bopper infatuation. I have changed my mind, at least for this movie. Depp does an outstanding job of showing us the inner workings of a man who has the sensibilities necessary to woo women ...no matter their age or culture. He shows us lessons we men all need to learn if we are to successfully love the women who come into our lives. To reach into a woman's soul with love and tenderness, insight into their wants and desires...their needs: this is the epitomy of a succesful love affair, whether it be with a new-found love or your long-married wife. It is also the ultimate failing of most of us men. We don't remember what we saw in our loves which attracted us to them in the first place, and we forget to continually woo them as we should and as they need.
Marlon Brando, as the worn-out , over-weight, and work-weary psychiatrist Dr. Jack Mickler, is a perfect foil to Depp's off the wall character. The interaction between the two and subsequent rebirth of real interest in life and love in Mickler is the real story for us. If we learn the truths taught by DeMarco, we all benefit.

The interplay between the characters of Don Juan and Don Octavio is full of warmth and caring. A real "feel good" movie. A treasure to watch Marlon Brando in one of his last films. Johnny Depp creates a character of sincerity and humor. The film asked us each to question for ourselves what is sane and what is not sane. You are left to draw you own conclusion.
