Plot: Hello, gorgeous! was Barbra Streisand's first comment to the Oscar statuette which she won for her performance in this biopic of entertainer Fanny Brice. This is also her first line in the film itself, the catalyst for a movie-long flashback. Repeating her Broadway role, Streisand stars as legendary comedienne Brice (1891-1951), whose life until the mid-1920s is romanticized herein. A gawky New Yawker, Brice fast-talks her way into show business, certain that she's destined to be The Greatest Star. Hired as a dramatic singer by impresario Flo Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon), Brice defies orders to play it straight, turning a Beautiful Bride tableau into a laugh riot by dressing herself up as an extremely pregnant newlywed. The stratagem turns Brice into an overnight star and the toast of Broadway. But all is not roses for Brice, especially in her turbulent private life as the wife of big-time gambler Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif). Nicky at first finds it amusing to be referred to as Mr. Brice, but he begins to resent his wife's fame and fortune and starts taking foolish risks with other people's money. The film was nominated for 8 Oscars, including Best Picture and Kay Medford for her portrayal of Brice's mother, Rose. Funny Girl was produced by Ray Stark, Brice's real-life son-in-law, who had enough material left over for a sequel, 1975's Funny Lady. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Ugly Duckling And The Con Man
Added 2/21/2009

I recently rewatched FUNNY GIRL for the first time in perhaps twenty years. And though I still think it is a fine film I was not as charmed by it as I was in my earlier days. Maybe I've read too much about the real Fanny Brice and Nick Arnstein and found out how very sanitized Arnstein's life story was for the Broadway musical and this film that is quite closely adapted from it. For whatever reason I did not find Omar Sharif's portrayal of the handsome gambler Nick as breathtaking in this viewing and I actually found his accent annoying. At any rate the film is still a must see for musical lovers and those like me with an interest in entertainment history though the viewer should be very aware of the great deal of license taken in retelling this bittersweet love story. And Streisand of course was young and at her full powers in her star making role as Fanny that still seems positively tailor made for her voice, looks and screen presence.

The is a bit personal, but my mother has dementia and can't enjoy most videos any more because they are hard to understand or follow. I thought she might enjoy Funny Girl because of the wonderful and fun music. She really did. Barbra Streisand's expressions and emotions are over the top and enjoyable for all.

How jaded were we in 1969 not to embrace this spectacular film? It is visually appealing with enchanting music and dance. Streisand's voice never sounded better and Matthau was never funnier. How wonderful to have it available on dvd to view and enjoy!

Classic American musical, eye and ear candy, must see Young Barbra
Added 8/15/2009

I think this movie takes you into a time in America that's enchanting, exciting, and to anyone of my peers an amazing ideal system. My husband was not a fan of Barbra and now he is amazed how taken he was by this film. For such a small price anyone who loves musicals and time movies this will steal your heart. I guarantee you will be singing the songs for weeks after!

A joyful fun-filled musical!
Added 8/11/2009

This classic musical has it all; extravagant costumes, excellent dialog, beautiful scenery, and profuse drama and some slapstick humor. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and experience all the wonder of the orginal movie.
