Plot: In the first in a series of detective comedies from director Blake Edwards starring Peter Sellers as bumbling French Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the mishap-prone snoop is actually a supporting player. David Niven stars as Sir Charles Litton, a suave jewel thief known as The Phantom. Vacationing in a deluxe Alpine resort, Litton's real purpose is to purloin the Pink Panther, a gem of enormous worth owned by a princess (Claudia Cardinale). On his trail for years, Inspector Clouseau keeps losing his quarry, perhaps because his wife Simone (Capucine) is Litton's lover and alerts him every time her husband draws near. Also after the Panther is Litton's American nephew, George (Robert Wagner). At a posh costume ball at the princess' villa, the bauble is stolen and Clouseau, still trying to determine the bandit's identity, is framed for the crime himself. The Pink Panther made Sellers and his Clouseau act so popular that the character moved to center stage in a series of farcical sequels. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

The Pink Panther - Peter Sellers - always a classic
Added 9/12/2009

The Pink Panther with its excellent cast remains an original classic and a great film to watch over time because of its nostalgia of the mid-1960s and the chemistry between this blend of interesting characters. The zany humor of Peter Sellers, introduction of two beautiful women, Capucine and Claudia Cardinale, and a brief scene-stealing performance by the lovely Fran Jeffries dancing and singing are gems that make Blake Edwards' original version of this film impossible to replicate with as much success and popularity as this film has maintained over the last several decades. David Niven's performance is also very entertaining as is Robert Wagner, and an unforgettable musical score by Henry Mancini make this a timeless classic.

No one can ever top Peter Sellers version

Steve Martin should never have tried to remake this movie; it is
a classic. Sellers is a great physical commedian and does a fine
"French" accent. Herbert Lom is the perfect foil for the Inspector.

an unmatched comedy classic!

The original and still the best title from the long-running series, THE PINK PANTHER (1963) is filled with director Blake Edwards' successful concoction of hilarious free-for-all slapstick sequences and sly, subtle comedy screenwriting.

When the beautiful Middle-Eastern Princess Dala (Claudia Cardinale) leaves her homeland and takes the priceless 'Pink Panther' diamond necklace with her, she becomes a ripe target for a notorious, high-society jewel thief. Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers) and his gorgeous wife Simone (Capucine) are dispatched to the ski lodge where the Princess is holidaying to try and expose the thief. But unbeknowst to Clouseau, the thief is closer than he ever thought possible...and his own wife is in on the plot!

Co-starring David Niven as the suave cat-burglar, Robert Wagner as his nephew; and singing sensation Fran Jeffries, THE PINK PANTHER is an endless comedy delight that only improves each time you see it. Marvel at the comic genius that was Peter Sellers, revel in the unmatched European grace and beauty of Capucine, and swing along to the catchy Henry Mancini score.

A no-brainer purchase. This belongs on every movie shelf.

still a delight

A comic gem, the best part of rewatching the first adventure of Inspector Clouseau is not just Peter Sellers but the absolute mastery shown by director Blake Edwards. Very very few comedies can use widescreen competently much less with finesse the way Edwards does here. No wonder they're still making spinoffs and sequels to it even now. Since I'm an Edwards and Sellers fanatic, I'm willing to pay $35 instead of $15 but that's probably too much for most anyone. That's a shame because the film looks smashing. Peter Sellers IS Pink Panther +++
Added 10/12/2009

This series of movies is almost sure to give anyone a belly-crunch workout via waves of gut-chuckles. The humor is of several types -- instant and ongoing -- noisy and quiet -- fast and slow. And, it uses sight, sound and touch to express all the fun. The spy crime mystery adventure action itself -- and the plot-twists -- and the settings -- is all fine, vivid and colorful. Then, there's the nostalgia factor -- Pink Panther is an easy way to visit the now-ancient non-pager, non-cellphone, non-computerized world. I even very much like the Pink Panther cartoons. The jazzy swing theme-music is unforgetable. But, it is Peter Sellers [and the other great actors] that really make this series so special. BTW "Return of the Pink Panther" is NOT in this particular set -- Get the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies however you can +++

a poor box set!
Added 9/15/2009

I am a huge Pink Panther fan, and this box set isn't a great box set.

First off, it is missing "Return of the Pink Panther", which is one of the better Pink Panther movies. Instead it includes "Trail of the Pink Panther" which is basically the outtakes that didn't make it onto "Revenge of the Pink Panther". Sellers had died before it's making, and so you are stuck with a sloppy thrown together movie. The first movie (the Pink Panther) and Revenge of the Pink Panther are fair, and Trail of the Pink Panther is brutal.

I would recommend buying Pink Panther Strikes again (Without question the best of the series), A Shot in the Dark, and Return of the Pink Panther. These 3 movies are the true stand outs, and you won't be wasting your time watching a ton of fluff.

Just my two cents!
