Plot: Loosely adapted from the classic 1932 horror film starring Boris Karloff, The Mummy is set in Egypt, where over 3,000 years ago the high priest Imhotep (played by Arnold Vosloo) was given the all-important assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. However, Imhotep made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Anck-Su-Namun, the mistress of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Imhotep murdered the Pharaoh, and his punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by Rick O'Connel (Brendan Fraser), an American expatriate who has joined the foreign legion, and Evelyn Carnarvon (Rachel Weisz), an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Imhotep, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreck vengeance on humanity. The Mummy was written and directed by Stephen Sommers, whose previous cinematic journeys into the past include The Jungle Book and The Adventures Of Huck Finn. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

You know what? I liked it (and I didn't think I would).

I didn't see all of this movie until recently-- only snatches. When it originally came out in the theaters in 1999, it looked like a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" rip-off and the reviews were bad. Then, as now, I considered "Raiders" to be the closest thing to a perfect movie there would ever be, so I wasn't about to entertain lesser imitators. 11 years later, having let down my guard a bit, I have to say The Mummy was an awesomely good time. Brendan Fraser is a sweet hero. There's an openness about his Rick that you don't usually see in action leads. Rachel Weisz is perfect as the plucky, klutzy smart girl, in classic movie actress fashion. There's a lot of humor, which I believe is the only way to make an action movie click. I'm sorry I was such a snob. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In the DVD extras, please don't miss the behind the scenes look at the battle between the mummy army and Rick as he saves Evelyn. The chorography involved in the scene is amazing, since there is no one there for Brendan Fraser to play against. It's an unbelievable solo dance that worked perfectly once the CG monsters were added later. You just have to see it to understand how improbably, stunningly good it is.

Originally, The Mummy genre was typically a horror film, but this revised version, adds, action, adventure, with a blend of light hearted drama. The result, is a satisfying, and entertaining film, in the style of the Indiana Jones films. With good visual effects, and characterizations.

The product is just what I wanted. Although the dvd's were in shrink wrap, the cover box looked used. Overall I'm pleased because I had no plan to keep the covering.
