Plot: A late-'30s-era London governess hired to work in the home of a high-profile nightclub chanteuse gets a taste of the good life when she is assigned the task of sorting out the singer's many unseemly affairs in a period comedy starring Frances McDormand and adapted from the novel by Winifred Watson. Unfairly and unceremoniously dismissed from her latest position without so much as a penny of severance pay, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (McDormand) realizes that in order to stay financially afloat she'll need to find a new job fast. Though she has worn out her welcome at the unemployment office due to her propensity to loose jobs, she's determined to seize the day and keep an open mind. Before she's booted from the office, she takes note of a job opening that is a little outside of her experience, but decides to pursue it, pretending she is the prospective employee the office was planning to recommend. Becoming a social secretary may not be exactly what Miss Pettigrew had in mind when the time came to seek out a new job, yet she hopes that her enthusiasm will offset her inexperience and throws caution to the wind. Upon arriving at the penthouse of up-and-coming American entertainer Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams), the unassuming Miss Pettigrew becomes instantly swept up in the high-society milieu. But serving as social secretary to one of the busiest women in the city is no easy task, and before the day is over, Miss Pettigrew and her new charge will both learn a thing or two about life and love. Now, as Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia make informed career decisions and choose between one of three potential suitors, her own attraction to a handsome clothing designer named Joe (Ciarán Hands) could prove her undoing. Joe's current fiancée, Edythe (Shirley Henderson), is an insolent fashion maven with little patience for those she deems incompetent or unworthy of the spotlight, and she currently has her targets locked onto a certain social secretary who doesn't yet grasp the complex social mechanisms of the high-society lifestyle. Simon Beaufoy and David Magee co-author a screenplay directed by Bharat Nalluri. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

This movie is delicious and feminine; May this reviewer recommend it to you as a Valentines gift for a witty and humourous friend? Like the equally excellent "Julia" (with Annette Benning,) "Miss Pettigrew" is set in London just before the outbreak of the Second World War, using some of the same locations. Unlike "Julia" it's humour is sweet-tempered, presenting the sometimes ticklish romantic situations occurring between the sexes with hilarity. All good persons are rewarded in the end and all bad ones left to ponder their trespasses. Frances McDormand is delightful as Guinivere Pettigrew; Amy Adams is perfect as the ambitious "dumb blond" Delysia LaFosse; handsome Lee Pace is her love and her down fall. Shirley Henderson plays the catty lingerie designer, Edythe DuBarry giving depth to a character that could have been made of cardboard in some one else's hands. The period re-creation is excellent with a great eye for clothing and hair-styles, especially for Miss Adams and Miss Henderson.

Amazon and it's partner vendors continue to exceed expectations in good price, fast ship, excellent quality whether new or used. Thank you.

The movie itself is superior story, acting, direction, photography. One of the best I have seen in years.

If you like the love story comedies of the 1930s and 40s, then Mrs. Pettigrew is for you. Great performances by the principals and supporting players transports one back to 1939 London. A wonderful silly diversion.

Tedious

The movie opens in London in 1938, as an out-of-work nanny (Frances McDormand) finagles her way into a job interview as social secretary to a would-be actress (Amy Adams), and spends the next 24 hours caught up in her world of show biz glamour and chaotic romances.

This movie tries to recreate the madcap, screwball comedies of the thirties that starred the likes of Carole Lombard, Irene Dunne, and Claudette Colbert, but fails miserably. Amy Adams, as the harebrained young actress, overacts horribly and is neither likeable nor sympathetic, still looking like the gauche hayseed she played in Junebug. Frances McDormand is very good as the down-trodden title character, but the script is corny with a ridiculous fairy tale-ending, and dashing Ciaran Hinds is wasted as her lingerie-designer Prince Charming. Shirley Henderson tries to be a villain but with her Moaning Myrle voice, she can't pull it off.

The movie never captures the feel of the thirties and would have been better filmed in black and white and with a more subtle actress like Emily Watson instead of Miss Adams. Not recommended.
