Plot: Adapted from the best-selling novel by Jessamyn West, Friendly Persuasion is set in Southern Indiana in the early days of the Civil War. Gary Cooper plays Jess Birdwell, patriarch of a Quaker family which does not believe in warfare. Birdwell's son Josh (Anthony Perkins) wishes to adhere to his family's pacifism, but is afraid that if he doesn't sign up for military service, he'll prove to be a coward. Josh joins the Home Guard, which disturbs his mother Eliza (Dorothy McGuire). But Jess Birdwell realizes that his son must follow the dictates of his own conscience. Josh proves his courage to himself when he is wounded during a Rebel raid, while the elder Birdwell is able to stay faithful to his religious calling by not killing a Southern soldier when given both a chance and a good reason to do so. Allegedly, writer Jessamyn West nearly scotched her deal with producer/director William Wyler and distributor Allied Artists when Gary Cooper, taking his fans into consideration, insisted upon including a scene in which he forsakes his pacifism and takes arms against the Rebels. If true, then wiser heads prevailed, since no such scene exists in the final release print. Though uncredited due to his status as a blacklistee, Michael Wilson wrote the screenplay for Friendly Persuasion--and even won an Oscar nomination. Also nominated was the film's chart-busting theme song, Thee I Love (by Dmitri Tiomkin and Paul Francis Webster). The story was remade as a 2-hour TV pilot film in 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Unplug the telephone. This is a movie that must not be interruped for any reason. It will make you laugh and cry. You will wish it would never end.

Classic movie.

Long one of my favorite movies. Old-fashioned, sentimental, humerous, a comfortable movie. Interesting tie-in to the Civil War and how neighbors with differing views can co-exist. Perhaps not realistic but still a good story of another time.

This movie is one of my favorites that I can watch over and over. I highly recommend it not only for adults, but for children of all ages. It's a great movie to watch to "get away from it all".

A lovely movie

This is a lovely movie, for many reasons.
1. Gary Cooper returns to the boyish innocence that he had before he'd done dark movies like The Fountainhead and High Noon.
2. Everyone is genuine in their roles; none of the cast members seem like they're acting.
3. It takes place in the Civil War, but there is no personal tragedy in the family like you're led to anticipate will happen. Everything goes back to normal in the end.
4. The movie is not mocking toward the Quakers, though it pokes fun at them (there's a big difference between the two).
5. There's not an evident political message in the movie (even though the writer was a communist/Marxist who would later write Che!), which is a rarity in films about wars. The messages are that you have to do as your conscience tells you, and that self-defense is not the same as murder. The movie favors moderation rather than abandonment of your beliefs, and the mother, Dorothy McGuire, characterizes that the most of all.

I can't really say anything negative about this movie! It's quite a comical movie.
