Plot: Barbra Streisand's directorial debut, Yentl, is a musical adaptation of a story by the beloved Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl (Streisand) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to study religious scripture. She is denied that possibility because she is a woman. She moves, passes herself off as a male named Anshel, and then begins her studies. She becomes close to fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin), eventually falling in love with him, although she can not reveal her true self as she would then be expelled. Avigdor is in love with Hadass (Amy Irving), but religious law forbids him from marrying her. Avigdor attempts to fix Anshel up with Hadass, leading to Hadass falling in love with Anshel. Yentl received four Academy Award nominations, including two Best Song nods. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Love Barbra Streisand

Love this movie as well as all of the messages it sends throughout the film. Great acting by the entire cast. Highly recommend this movie. Barbra Streisand is both a master behind the camera as well as on screen. What a legend!

only Streisand musical to receive both Oscar & Razzie nominations

I distinctly remember walking out of this movie in multiplex (thank god for them!!) because of the mawkishness of the movie. Issac B. Singer, the original author of the story wrote a scathing review of this movie and one can see why. Normally I like a lot of the songs of the Bergman's and Michel Legrand but there is not one single memorable show stopping tune in this whole movie like nothing like "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever", probably the last memorable Streisand musical since it was directed by the genius, Vicente Minnelli and scored by my favorite pop arranger, Nelson Riddle. If you can buy the premise of Streisand posing as man to impress a woman (Amy Irving who was nominated for a Razzie) then maybe you'll enjoy this movie. But as an ex-Streisand fan, I doubt it unless you're one of those fans who feel that Babs can do no wrong!! I'm not sure which film is the worst Streisand has ever made, this one or the remake of "A Star is Born".

I'm a great fan of Barbra Streisand, and it is obvious that she put her heart and soul into this film. It is beautifully filmed and treats the material with an almost heavy-handed reverence. But try as I might to like "Yentl," I just couldn't.

This story has been told, and told, and told. From "Some Like it Hot," to "Victor, Victoria," to "Tootsie," the idea of a woman/man pretending to be a man/woman, only to be faced with the dilemma of falling in love and having to reveal their secret...we have seen this tale so many times. Unfortunately for "Yentl," there is nothing new or surprising in this version of the gender-changing story, and others have done a far better job of telling it. It is as predictable as the moon phases and far less interesting. Not for one minute does Barbra Streisand make a convincing man, and I found myself spending the entire film puzzling that her obvious femininity seemed to be lost on the other characters. Barbra's singing is, of course, wonderful. She truly possesses one of the most powerful and stunning voices in film history. But her incredible voice is wasted on a collection of dull and forgetable songs.

"Yentl" wants very much to be a classic in the vein of "Funny Girl." The final shot in the film is an obvious attempt to recapture the same magic Streisand gave us as Fanny Brice hitting that massive note at the end of "Don't Rain on My Parade." For me it fell flat along with the rest of the film.

I guess even a great talent like Streisand is entitled to a stinker.
