Plot: Anthony Perkins, in one of his last roles, is the sole highlight of this mundane, German-made psychological thriller, based on a novel by Ruth Rendell. Perkins plays Arthur, an obsessive-compulsive English bachelor with a history of far more destructive habits -- the worst of which include his reign of terror as the Kenbourne Killer, who is responsible for the strangulation murders of several prostitutes. Like a certain legendary Perkins character of yore, Arthur has some Oedipal issues that need working out and fixates his mother fixation on the department-store mannequin he keeps in the secluded boarding house where he spends his retirement. When this decidedly one-sided relationship is disrupted by the sudden loss of the dummy, poor Arthur goes 'round the bend again... but the blame for the new string of murders falls on one of his neighbors instead. Bogged down by pedestrian direction and a romantic subplot that serves little purpose, this attempt at a detailed portrayal of madness is kept aloft (barely) on the basis of Perkins' brooding, restrained performance. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

LAST CALL FOR ANTHONY PERKINS
Added 1/18/2004

Made in Germany and England in 1991 this was the great Anthony Perkins' last cinema role (his last film role was in the 1992 TV movie "In the Deep Woods"). Here again he plays another demented paranoid Norman Bates type killer who goes off the deep end once again when his beloved mannequin is taken away from him. It dosen't help when it was his namesake, downstairs in tha apartment block that was responsible for this.
Anthony Perkins deserved better than this, but as usual his presence makes the movie worth while.

intelligent thriller
Added 10/9/1999

The high intensity of Anthony Perkins in all his roles give also this intelligent thriller a genious touch. I read the book. But the film is much better than this book ever can be. Bohm shows also high quality acting. Because of Perkins this movie will become over the years cult status.
