The classic Dickens tale of honour and sacrifice involving the cruel Marquis St Evremonde (Barry Morse), his nephew Charles Darnay, who gives up his inheritance to protest the inhumanity of his family, and Sydney Carton, the dissolute English lawyer who gives up his life to save his friend (Chris Sarandon). It also involves the beautiful Lucie (Alice Krige), for whose love both Charles and Sydney would gladly lay down their lives, and her father, Dr Manette (Peter Cushing). Here too is the fanatical Madame Defarge (Billie Whitelaw), whose fervour fuelled the flashing blade of the guillotine. This beautifully staged production captures all the drama and emotion of some of the most blood-stained pages in history.
