Jean, a young woman held in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, meets a captive Australian, Joe, and the two form a mutually affectionate relationship. He tells her of his home town of Alice Springs and how he hopes to return. To relieve the starvation of the female prisoners Joe steals some chickens, but is caught and sentenced to be executed in front of the other prisoners. Later, back in peacetime London, Jean decides to return to Malaya, where she learns that Joe did not actually die.
