Jennie is an aspiring ballerina with a potentially successful career in front of her. Then one day she meets and falls in love with Maurice, a sculptor. This leads to the neglect of her career, but Jenny is content with Maurice, until he refuses to marry her, at which point his best friend proposes. She refuses him, and when her mother dies, resigns herself to a marriage of duty. She has not forgotten Maurice, however, and he has not forgotten her. Their love and its impossibility lead to the dark climax of the film.
