Set in an Italian convent during World War II, where the nuns house refugee children left orphaned by the Nazis. They are also helping Jewish children to escape over the nearby border. The Italian commander deliberately turns a blind eye to their actions, as he sympathises both with the children and the nuns. All is well until a German officer arrives and discovers the escape plans. On his orders, the nuns are to be executed, but who will perform such a task?
