Harry Willette (ALAN ARKIN), a former major league baseball pitcher with the Chicago Barons, who has retired to Florida with his wife Cassie, hopes each year that he will be elected to baseballs Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. When his former colleague and best friend, Raymond Maracle (GRAHAM GREENE), is elected before him but dies before knowing, Harry decides to go to Cooperstown himself to accept the award on his late friends behalf. Cassie sends Jody (JOSH CHARLES), their teenage motor-bike riding, Karate-loving great nephew, in pursuit. What neither of them realise is that Harry is travelling with the ghost of Raymond. En route, old differences are settled, new friendships are made and eventually everyone converges on Cooperstown where Harry makes his protest.
