Desperate Characters

Suppressed emotion and desire surface for Sophie (Shirley MacLaine) and her husband, Otto (Kenneth Mars). Middle-aged and childless, they appear all too normal, but deep within, they suffer from despair and emptiness. Their marriage is nothing more than a shield against the terrifying uncertainty of divorce, but neither dares acknowledge the enormous void in their lives. They vainly seek relief in outside friendships and futile extramarital affairs. When they see their home ransacked, their eyes are opened and they realise they've been dreaming. Now their time to live has come.
