Taped in front of a live audience at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, NY, Comedian and actor Gary Gulman stars in his first HBO stand-up comedy special in which he opens up about his mental health issues in a poignant and hilarious way. A hopeful, funny show about a serious subject matter, Gary Gulman: The Great Depresh features Gulman telling the full arc of his story, from growing up as a sensitive kid in Massachusetts who was recruited into sports because of his height, to his early days doing comedy, to his increasingly troubling bouts with depression as an adult.
Directed by Michael Bonfiglio (HBO’s May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers) and Executive Produced Judd Apatow (HBO's Girls, Crashing), The Great Depresh mixes Gulman's standup with documentary scenes related to his history with depression, including a visit to his childhood home in Peabody, MA, where Gary shows a book he wrote as a young boy called "The Lonely Tree" and has a sit-down interview with Gary's mother Barbara (who says she always thought Gary was a happy child growing up.) We also see Gary catching up at NYC's Comedy Cellar with comedian and friend Robert Kelly, who opens up about his own struggles with depression, and a session with Gary's psychiatrist and Gary's wife Sadé, plus more.
Throughout the special, Gary also offers his hilarious observations on a number of topics, including: his admiration for Millennial attitudes toward bullying, the reasons he loves basketball (and why he tried to avoid playing football in high school), menacing TV news theme songs, how his mother's voice is always in his head, and much more.
