Griffiths' poignant and harrowing tale of lovers torn apart by World War I, a conflict beyond their comprehension. They both lose family members; the girl is nearly driven insane, and the boy is wounded and thought lost. Made in the heat of World War I, the film is intensely anti-German although its propaganda message now appears somewhat dated. Some of the war scenes were filmed on location near the actual front lines in France.
