The appearance of German actress-turned Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich in this production indicates Korda’s ability to tempt expensive talent to act in his British films. Robert Donat stars as Ainsley Fotheringill, an English journalist expelled from Russia for writing an anti-Tsarist article. He is persuaded to join the Bolshevik movement as a British spy but is implicated in a plot to assassinate a government minister. After years in Siberia, he is rescued by the Red Army and assigned the task of escorting Countess Alexandra Vladinoff (Dietrich) to Petrograd for interrogation. As the two embark upon their journey, however, matters become complicated when they fall in love.
