In a mysterious and haunting dream world, a 12-year-old girl meets the 13th century young poet Rumi, as they travel through a fantastical land where luxurious airships float through the air, and unfurling, insidious black tendrils spread over a mystical city. Directed by Alex Kronemer, Lamya’s Poem is a heartfelt animated tale that follows a Syrian girl as she flees her war-torn country on a perilous journey that eventually brings her to the unwelcoming shores of a European refugee camp. The lives of Lamya, escaping the Syrian Civil War in 2016, and young Rumi, running away from Mongol hordes in 1221, curiously parallel each other; in the timeless space where the two meet, each ends up saving the other from despair and hopelessness. This moving film conveys the sudden violence of war, the disorientation of displacement, and the risks many take to just survive—all through the lens of an imaginative, bright young girl.
