Mexican day laborer Chu Chu Ramirez (Ricardo Montalban) has just obtained his U.S. citizenship. Convinced that all his troubles are behind him, Ramirez gets a job working for farmer Ansel Ames (Wendell Corey) and his emotionally-troubled wife (Claire Trevor). After work, Ramirez courts local barfly Nancy (Shelley Winters). Despite Ramirez's optimism and hard work, farmer Ames eventually takes advantage of his trust, and Ramirez finds himself the victim of the same justice system he once lauded.
