Ponniyin Selvan is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language epic historical fiction film directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam, under his production studio Madras Talkies, along with Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner Lyca Productions. An adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name, the film is written by Ratnam along with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala and Aishwarya Lekshmi, while Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, and Ashwin Kakumanu appear in supporting roles. The film's music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. Set in 9th century, the film revolves around the early life of Chola Prince Arulmozhi Varman who later known as the Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola and was the most powerful king in south at his time chiefly remembered for reinstating the Chola power and ensuring its supremacy in south India and Indian Ocean. Many Veteran actors and directors from Tamil cinema have tried to make Ponniyin Selvan into movie ever since the novel Ponniyin Selvan gained popularity, but all of them failed due to different reasons. Ponniyin Selvan has been regarded as the dream project of Tamil cinema. It is also the second most expensive Indian film with a budget of ₹500 crore (US$66 million) while the first being 2.0.
