Wurttemberg in the Eighteenth Century was a small independent state in Germany, ruled by a hereditary duke. It was a time of brutality and universal intolerance and the Jews above all suffered oppression and boycott. This is the story of Joseph Suss Oppenheimer, socially a low-ranking Jew, whose pursuit of economic power enables him to mingle with nobility, in the service of the Duke, in order to break down the barriers of the Ghetto. When the Duke wrongs him, he plots his downfall, which will have dark consequences for all concerned. Adapted from the original novel by Lion Feuchtwanger.
